Short Story
By Therese Normelius
A girl and her little brother walked home from school that was in former arts centre by the
metro plate. A pretty good location don’t you think?
A pretty quiet morning, just another day in the half burnt town Stockholm.
The day was September 1 year 2107 and the boy named Hugo had just Turned 7 years old and
The family would have a special dinner just for him. When they came home and met a very happy and loving mother for once, for the looks of it, she hadn’t seen the vodka bottle Nayla hidden under the sink before she went to school with Hugo.
-Mum when is dad done working? Asked Nayla with a slightly worried voice.
- He is now in his office, we will go as soon he is done. Which could be any day now. She said it with a humourous voice.
Hugo curious as he was run up to dad’s office to get him to speed up.
Nayla And Hugo’s dad worked as an architect at home, but in this times didn’t the business go so good. Everyone was broke. And just had the money to survive.
After much hassle, they were on their way to the nicest plaice they know, McDonald’s.
They had a nice time as a family for once, And jut when they was going to leave they heard the screams from outside.
The family saw hundreds of people running across the street, the ground started shaking and everything fell down from the walls.
They ran towards the door, The roof came down Nayla and Hugo saw there parents crushed under the masses of bricks and rubble.
Terrified the children ran along with the stream of people and hide in school.
The day after the curious and heartbreaking event they woke up in the hallway of the school with swollen eyes after they cried themselves to sleep,
The janitor had unlocked the school canteen and were in there cleaning the floors.
Nayla asked him if he had any food.
-Go in to the cafeteria behind the counter, I won’t tell. He answers.
Nayla saw a newspaper on one of the tables when she and Hugo was walking towards the cafeteria.
There it was, on the paper with large letters, another attack from the fellow man.
The whole area had devastating numbers of deaths, Including there parents.
The school bell rang; Hugo and Nayla went to class, for a moment they felt like everything was normal.
But when they met after school they knew that there just them against the world again.
They walked towards south of Stockholm because the train hadn’t worked for several month. And the busses…yes there wasn’t any fuel for them, and workers for that matter.
Hours later they found shelter in an old Mall just by the train station in Årstaberg,
They found can food in the abandoned grocery store.
-So much for five starred hotels huh, Hugo? Nayla said nervously and giggled.
Hugo hadn’t talked much the past days but when she mad that little joke, he smiled and nod.
Month went by and when December came Nayla knew that they couldn’t continue like this.
-Hugo, we need to talk…
Hugo looked at her curiously.
-We need to find a home for you, You are just 7 years old and you can’t live like this. This isn’t a life of a 7-year-old boy, you can easily be adopted by a foster family. I am 16 no one want to adopt a 16 year-old gir…she stopped talking, Hugo looked devastated. He looked like he had lost his only hope in the world.
-No…No Hugo, I was just kidding, it was just a joke…you know, Joke…hehe…
-Don’t you ever talk like that again Nayla, you are the only friend I’ve got we will always be happy as long we have each other. Hugo Cried.
Hugo threw himself into Naylas arms and hugged her as hard as he could.
-Hugo be quiet! Nayla said, I heard something
there was someone in the building, The children could hear someone whisper. They had met people before the past month but a lot of them were just on trusty people looking for money.
-WHO ARE YOU!? Nayla screamed! She was terrified but of course she didn’t want Hugo to know.
And then a man step out of the shadows and in to the light, He reminded them of their dad, he had nice eyes.
-Hello, my name is Ulrik Roberts, honey come here look what I found!
A woman came in to the light and behind her was a little girl hiding behind her skirt.
This is my family my daughter Marie and my beautiful wife Leona.
Hugo and Nayla watched the family suspiciously. Nayla rose up from the dirty mattress and waved to Hugo as she walked up to the family, Hugo got up and followed her shortly.
-I am Nayla and this is Hugo. She said with a shaky and shy voice.
-Are you alone here? Asked Leona.
-Yes, do you have any food? Hugo said with an eager voice.
- Haha! Are you guys hungry, we live right across the street. Said Ulrik with a kind and slight humourous voice.
The children went with the family and never had to sleep on the street and be hungry again.
