I've seen reports where a guy cleared out 2,5M archers with a cataphract wave. Same as cavalry attacks, these type of units work on compact defense only. If you attack on ranged defense it'll cause almost none damage on defender. Ballista rainbow - most needed waves later on in the game to take out enemy cities faster.
