Excerpt from Contemporary French Painters an Essay

Since the publication of A Painter's Camp, the author's labors, as a writer on art, have been confined to occasional articles in various periodicals, and the art-criticism in the Saturday Review. Projects of a more important kind have been entertained in this interval; but, with one exception, have always been abandoned for the same reason, the difficulty of writing anything of use without illustrations so nu merous and costly as to alarm the prudence even of liberal publishers. The present Essay, in which there is little detailed description of works that the reader has not seen, and which is accompanied by illustra tions sufficiently abundant to give a good idea of some of the principal artists mentioned, is a realiza tion of the author's wishes, so far as is compatible with the smallness of its scale and the imperfections of his knowledge. It appears to be more and more evident that criticisms of pictures which the reader has not seen are of no use, and that it is a waste of time to write them. This discouraging fact has not.
