This original portrayal of "Arthur", as opposed to the mystical elements of the tale in past Arthur films, uses names and other elements from the traditional, medieval, Catholic Arthurian cycle in a very different, yet historically less implausible, almost realistic plot. Around 400 AD, the Roman empire, stretched across many nations, from Arabia to Britain, collapsed and skirmishes over power broke out in outlying countries. The conquering Romans become impressed with the weaponry and fighting skills of the warrior Sarmatian people, which have to send their sons to serve Rome fifteen years in the cavalry before these knights may return home. Arthur is Artorius Castus, whose future Knights of the Round Table, eager to achieve their freedom, are charged by bishop Germanius with one final task before their discharge: a Roman estate tyrant and his family, especially adolescent son Alecto, who is selected for a great future in Rome, must be rescued thereto from the invading Saxons, whose ruthless warrior-king orders his conquering tribal army to pillage and burn entire villages down. But there is another danger lurking on the road to freedom - the Woads, Celtic Britton rebels who hate the Romans, lead by the 'magician' Merlin, who however realizes Rome is no longer the main threat and offers Artorius a novel alliance after sparing his life in an ambush.

Somewhere there is a good film in here, I just haven't been able to find it. A new spin on an old story, gritty detail and great battles I was all up for it, but it failed to entertain. After a while I could not care for the characters (apart from Lancelot they were all boring and stereotyped), what was going on or why.
Even in this ancient world there could have been some laughs. Humour gives characters life and depth, it does that in real life and it does so in any story. This film takes itself to serious for its content and frankly doesn't have the talent to pull that off. The director this time, has no Denzel Washington to keep you glued to the screen. He is able in the battle scenes but forgets the reason why we bought a ticket or the DVD.
I hoped for another Gladiator, entertaining, tough and captivating. Alas it didn't turn out that way. I'll turn to the old John Boorman movie "Excalibur", less real and more fantasy. Better actors, More Fun. It's sensual. It makes you forget about time. It keeps your attention.
I definitely have mixed thoughts and emotions about this movie. I can't really say that I liked it. I can't really say I didn't like it. I'm sitting on the fence. I've always loved the story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, but this movie takes everything to a new proportion. It really has nothing to do with the original story, but I guess that's because it's an adaptation. Still, perhaps stories should not have this extreme of an adaptation. The only thing I truly liked was the actors. Clive Owen, Keira Knightly, Joel Edgerton, Ioan Gruffudd, and Mads Mikkelson among many others made quite the performance.
Unfortunately, none of this is very much fun. The cinematography is dark and depressing. The dialogue is stilted. And for some reason, director Antoine Fuqua has even ditched the Arthur/Guinevere/ Lancelot love triangle.

the Picts are probably the oldest native inhabitants of Britain, yet almost nothing is known about them. Wild tribes people living north of Hadrian's Wall, they carried on a guerrilla war against the Romans. Their name means "the Painted Ones" - probably given to them from their habit of tattooing themselves with intricate markings, believed to be tribal or religious. The Woads, as they are called in the movie - the name is taken from the blue dye which they use to paint their bodies.
