Did our Lord permit Judas Iscariot to partake of the sacrament? According to the best authorities, the Scriptures indicate that the betrayer had left the company when the sacred ordinance was ii1 stituted. Jesus it seems, was troubled in His spirit because of the presence of Judas, and hastened his departure by telling him that He knew of his designs. Judas, too, was evidently ill at ease when one disciple after another asked, Lord, is it I? And so, as soon as he had partaken of the second course, the Master having dipped a piece of bread in the haroseth, or sauce, and given it to him, he went out. Then our Lord instituted the supper and offered His High-priestly prayer. Judas was not present during the sacred moments preceding the agony of Gethsemane and the cross.
But although Judas was not permitted to partake of the sacra ment, the elders of the Church are commanded not to exclude from the sacrament meetings those who are earnestly seeking the kingdom, even if they are not members (doe. And Gov. 46: In the primitive church, after the departure of the apostles, it be came a custom to dismiss first the unconverted hearers, and then those who had applied for membership, the so - called catechumens. Only those who had been baptized and were faithful members remained for the communion service. They had three different missas, or masses, each adapted for a different class. But the Church has been commanded not to exclude anybody from the sacrament meetings. It was one of the mistakes of the early church whereby the sacrament came to be regarded as the service, to the exclusion of the preaching of the gospel, and the Ch1u°ch to-day is warned against that error.
