In this sequel, Ho initially refuses to go undercover to bust the gang he used to work for in exchange for his release from prison. He only accepts after his little brother, the policeman Kit accepts the assignment. Meanwhile in New York Ken Gor, the twin brother of Mark Gor from the 1st movie, shelters the boss of the gang, who has had to flee after it is taken over by a more aggressive leadership.
A restauranteur teams up with a police officer and his ex-con brother to avenge the death of a friend's daughter.
I'm sure, if I had seen this movie earlier than last year, I would've loved it but I guess all the hype kinda killed it for me. There are parts of this movie that are so incredibly cheesy that you can't help but wonder if this movie was supposed to be a comedy. There's some sap in the movie that should have been less heavy handed. Some of it comes across well but other parts are just cheese. I will say this though: a lot of people get shot. As with nearly all of John Woo's films, there's the shootout to end all shootouts but this one in particular takes the cake for being the most ridiculous! It's basically four guys armed with guns, shotguns, grenades, swords, you name it, against like two hundred and fifty. There's enough action in this film to make you choke on your drool. And those two gangsters in the restaurant, priceless! I did find the film a little disappointing compared to some of his later work (not counting the Hollywood pics, some big boos to a couple of them) but overall it's just kinda sloppy. Apparently this was due to several difficulties behind the scenes but I hardly know the details. Try it if you like John Woo at all. Rating: *** out of *****.
In general this was a pretty good John Woo movie. But there were a few things I REALLY didn't like. The biggest thing was the music. How horrible! It's too whiny and high-pitched. I also thought some of the acting was a little over the top. I usually like that about John Woo movies but this was a little rediculous. I hated Chow Yun-Fat's scene in the restaurant with the gangsters and I was laughing through Johnny's bit of catatonia.
Other than that it was standard John Woo fare.
