Terry is a tough, mercenary, master of martial arts. When an important business magnate dies, leaving billions to his daughter, the Mafia and Yakuza try to hire Terry to kidnap the daughter. When they refuse to meet his exorbitant price, then try to kill him to conceal their secret plans, he promptly offers his services to protect her. Much ultra-violent martial-arts fighting action, as expected, ensues. This also includes a subplot of a family's bloodfeud with Terry over a disputed debt.
Tough karate master Terry Tsurugi takes it upon himself to protect a late businessman's daughter from the Yakuza.
Shame on me: I've been reviewing cult Japanese movies for years now but this is the first Sonny Chiba film I've tackled. And I call myself a martial arts fan...
Sonny is, of course, a legend of Japanese action cinema, and The Street Fighter is his undisputed masterpiece, an incredibly violent showcase for the star's remarkable Karate skills (and his reasonable impression of Bruce Lee). As seemingly indestructible mercenary anti-hero Terry Tsurugi, Sonny kicks, punches and tears through a veritable army of opponents, leaving them either dead, or writhing on the floor in agony, blood pouring from one or more orifices. The brutality reaches a climax in a stunning finale set aboard a rain-lashed oil tanker which must rank as one of the most intense fight scenes ever committed to film.
But it's not just about the violence: the stylish execution also makes this a cut above many martial arts movies of the day, with great cinematography, innovative direction from Shigehiro Ozawa (including the legendary 'X-Ray' punch shot mimicked in Jet Li's Romeo Must Die), great editing and a funky 70s soundtrack. Do yourself a favour... don't leave it as long as I did before watching this incredible piece of Asian excess.

Considering the types of films we Americans were making back in 1974, this film stands up rather well. Of course, the best thing about it is Sonny Chiba's absolute commitment to doing everything in the most macho, accentuated way possible. I hate to be a copycat, but "Injured ape with respiratory problems" is the perfect way to describe his fighting style. Sonny does some pretty weird poses, and kind of slouches and stutter-steps around like James Dean doing improvisational ballet. That, and the thirty second pauses he takes between beating up people to breathe/twist face/grunt/breathe/try to breathe/twist face, grunt are priceless. I think you can really see his ninjitsu training in this film. He does a lot of wasteful movements. I recommend the film, but the guy in no way could be called the successor to Bruce Lee.
