I just finished watching season 1 of Vikings on Netflix. I was really excited at first but I'm bailing on it. I could push past the mix of bad accents which were uncomfortable but bearable. Casting choices were rather strange at times but at least it was with minor characters. It quickly became unimaginative and annoying in regards to betrayal, infidelity and bad theology and mythology. Ragnar is awesome to look at but he's an asshole to family and friends. I really wished it had been as good as the reviews said but, oh well. It does have beautiful scenery though. It definitely has that going for it. But that's about all and yes, I'm including Fimmel when I say that.
Amazing - more interesting and realistic than Game of Thrones.
The Viking world and Europe is superbly shown, and the plot is extremely interesting into the 4th season where I'm at (not like some shows that lose speed after the 2nd season). In this season it begins to get more complex, and very well done.
Cast is excellently picked - everyone fits their role and you have the opportunity to see some great new talent.
Battle scenes are excellent, every single thing in the show is amazing. Realism - so realistic. Landscape shots will amaze you in their beauty. One of the best I've ever seen.
I'm going to try and explain why I like it - the action, the raw masculinity, beauty, historical drama along with associated costumes and weapons, the excellent, convincing and likable cast (not like the Sand Snakes of Dorne in Game of Thrones). Aside from being written to be entertaining, the show also makes a genuine effort to portray the Vikings' reality - their beliefs, the cultural clash between Christianity and Norse Paganism, views on life and death, hardship and pleasure.
Excellent, and just seems to be getting better and better. Definitely worth a watch.
This is common in English-speaking produced movies and TV shows. Generally the characters speak English when they are talking among themselves. But it's implied they are still speaking their native tongue. The Vikings are generally speaking Icelandic since it is the language closest to Old Norse, the language of the Vikings. They also use some words from Swedish and Danish, though we *hear* it as English. When speaking with foreign characters, such as characters from England, they speak in Icelandic and we see subtitles. This is to show the English characters can't understand them.
Where it gets confusing to some viewers is that the English characters are often speaking Old English when among the Vikings, which can sound very similar to Swedish to an untrained ear. The acting takes place around a lake in Wicklow, Ireland, but some additional photography was taken in Western Norway. Aslaug shows up with her huge dog in the Episode "All Change" S01E09. a5c7b9f00b
