Tobin Frost was once a well respected CIA agent, until he turned nine years ago, he who is now wanted for espionage. Largely underground, he voluntarily turns himself in to the US government via their consulate in Cape Town, South Africa. From there, he is transferred to a safe house overseen by neophyte CIA agent Matthew Weston, this posting which is relatively low within the bureaucracy. Weston's job is to protect his house guests at all cost. Out of circumstance, Weston and Frost are forced to go on the run from the house, largely without the help of anyone else within the agency, including those at Langley such as Weston's boss David Barlow, Barlow's peer Catherine Linklater who is in charge of the section interrogating Frost, and their superior Deputy Director Harlan Whitford, that is until they are able to give him further instructions. Weston's task is difficult as they are being pursued by some men who are after Frost for some reason and are willing to kill, and Frost is largely an unwilling companion, who tries to undermine Weston, particularly psychologically, and escape at every opportunity. Weston has no idea why Frost came in, something those at Langley are trying to determine. Weston knows his career is on the line if he fails in the mission, that is if he survives. During the process, Weston is continually thinking about his girlfriend, French national Ana Moreau, to who he lied about his job, and thus whose life may be in danger without her even knowing it or ever knowing why it may have been in danger.
A young CIA agent is tasked with looking after a fugitive in a safe house. But when the safe house is attacked, he finds himself on the run with his charge.
This movie is a huge waste of time and money. Boring, dumb, lousy pile of junk. Can't believe two great actors agreed to do this film. Both Ryan Renolds and Denzel Washington give solid performances despite the weak and predictable script. Some action scenes were good or relatively better than the other scenes in this movie. But those scenes were so far and in between. Gotta admit though, the trailer tricked me into watching it and boy what a huge disappointment the movie turned out to be!!
I'll give it 3 out of 10 just for the effort put in by RR and DW. If you want to watch a dumb action movie, go for it!
I think that I will start out by saying that Safe House was very predictable and very Bourne-like (although not quite as good). The fact that the previews included the next installment of the Bourne series, The Bourne Legacy, probably didn't help. The one thing that I can say about the film is that it was definitely action packed, although some of the actions scenes seemed to drag on forever. And not only that, but it seemed like those scenes were really shaky and it was really starting to get on my nerves. There were also a couple of times that I found myself thinking "why would they do that? That is stupid". For this film to be about espionage and the CIA, I think that writer David Guggenheim could have come up with more cleaver drama and dialog rather than turning this film into a formula film. I think that Denzel Washington (Tobin Frost) as the CIA agent gone rogue was one of the saving graces in this film. He always seems to be cast as a tough guy in such films like American Gangster and Training Day. For once I would like to see him in a not so tough role. Let's see the softer side of Denzel for a change. During the film I found myself feeling sorry for Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds). This poor guy was thrust into an assignment that he was simply not prepared for. I saw an interview with Ryan Reynolds and he said that he actually gave Denzel a black eye during the shooting. The black eye came in handy as it turns out. The rest of the cast played their parts, it's just that I've seen the roles before and there just wasn't enough uniqueness to make anyone else stand out. All in all I found the film mildly entertaining and it did keep my attention. But I have to say that the predictability of the film kind of ruined it for me. Trust me; you've seen all this before. I think that the cast saves this film from becoming a complete disaster. If you are just bored this weekend and have nothing to do then I say go out and see it. However, in hindsight I probably would have waited until it came out on DVD. With very little enthusiasm and much hesitation, I am giving this film an amber light.
Terse and understated, this is a spy vs. spy tale designed to minimize talk and maximize action, not at all a bad thing in movies but over-worked to near-exhaustion here.
