In New Orleans, the former smuggler Chris Faraday has regenerated and raised a family of his own with his wife Kate and their two children. Chris works in installation of alarms and his father is locked in prison for smuggling. When his brother-in-law Andy dumps in the sea water 10 pounds of cocaine that he is smuggling for the drug lord Tim Briggs to escape from the custom officers, Chris is forced to pay Andy's debts to protect the youngster and his own family. Chris leaves his wife and children under the protection of his best friend Sebastian Abney and travels in a Container Carrier to Panama to bring counterfeit bills and raise the money to pay Briggs. But Briggs and his partner want to force Chris to smuggle drugs and will use his family to reach their objective. Meanwhile Chris is betrayed and gets in trouble in Panama.
Chris Faraday once smuggled illegal items or contraband into the country on freighters. He left that life behind, got married, has a family and went legit. But when his brother-in-law got involved with Briggs, a drug dealer and when he blew a deal, Briggs demands restitution which he can't deliver. So Chris offers to find a way to pay Briggs but then he threatens Chris' family if he doesn't deliver. So he gets on a freighter destined for Panama and he sets out to bring back some counterfeit currency. Briggs "goes to see" Chris' family. When Chris learns of this he asks his friend Sebastian to take care of them which he does. He tells Chris that it would be better to bring drugs instead of the cash.
I've just realized I haven't written the review for this and a few weeks have passed. I'm not sure how that happened but what is telling is that much of the film is just a hazy blur in my mind. I enjoyed it, it didn't rock my world but I'm sure I'll watch it again sometime and be entertained without it burning itself into my memory.
Contraband is yet another take on the 'one final job' sub-genre. I'm sure we've had sufficient to keep us going but not many of them have starred Mark Wahlberg. Here, as Chris Farraday, a former smuggler, he coasts in a role that will pay for another house but won't win him any awards. Now married with a family, Farraday is on the fairly straight and narrowish when his brother-in-law falls into smuggling drugs on a freighter for Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi in another of his impressively drug-addled, vicious roles), predictably screws up and needs Farraday to emerge from 'retirement' for, all together now, one last job.
It's all fairy obvious but spiced up with some sea-faring drama, corruption from those who should know better and a portion or two of unpleasant violence towards Farraday's wife, played by Kate Beckinsale in a role that implies greater depths to her much admired physical appearance and, less so, her acting range. However many weeks after the event, hers is the performance that remains freshest in my mind and almost persuades me to take a punt on the numerous Underworld sequels. Almost.
If you like your crime yarns packed with action, double-crossing and are not repelled by women being beaten up (fear not, it does not glorify the violence or make it anything other than sickening and abhorrent) then maybe Contraband is one to add to your Love Film. If not, stick to We Bought a Zoo or The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Contraband– The first half or so of this movie is very "see spot run" with nothing clever or, frankly, intriguing going on. It's like being on a UPS delivery run and is workman like. Then, while still not delivering anything clever, it finally kicks in to gear and actually finishes strong. The fine cast elevates the overall mark but I have to say Kate Beckinsale is absolutely wasted in this effort. She's a brainless and useless wife in distress character that isn't even given the chance to be eye candy. She's written as a possession with no depth. Overall, the writing and character beats are atrocious yet I somewhat enjoyed the movie somehow.
Heist, swindle, and other like-minded genre films thrive or flounder on the mechanics of their story's dangerously elaborate scheme, a fact ably proven by Contraband, a tale of high-seas smuggling without a clever thought in its leaden, derivative head.
When Giovanni Ribisi first auditioned for Contraband, it was for a different part. The director, Kormákur, suggested he read for Tim Briggs, the local thug who terrorizes the Farraday family. Kormákur says he was originally looking for the tough guy, but he felt that Ribisi brought something unexpected and more dangerous than a typical bully would. a5c7b9f00b
