In the US-government's special ops, Scott is a shooter, not a planner, doing the job without regard to quaint or obsolete convention. When a Harvard undergrad goes missing (the daughter of a US leader), it's Scott who applies the pressure, first to her boyfriend, then to a madam whose cathouse is the initial stop en route to a white slavery auction in Dubai. The abductors may not know the girl's identity, but once they figure it out, she's doomed. Deadly double crosses force Scott to become a planner. Through it all, earnest TV newscasters read the drivel they're handed.
The investigation into a kidnapping of the daughter of a high-ranking US government official.
Robert Scott (Val Kilmer) is a military consultant working on Delta Force recruits. Curtis (Derek Luke) is one of those recruits. The president's daughter Laura Newton (Kristen Bell) goes missing and Robert is brought in. He's given 2 days before news spreads to the media. He brings Curtis in to assist him and tracks her to an international sex ring. It's a murky world of secret and mystery.
David Mamet tries his hand on a crime mystery action thriller. I rarely ask for more introduction but I want to know who Robert Scott was before his mysterious present day job. The murky start causes confusion about the limits of his powers or simply what is his job. The suspense is pretty good as the plot keeps it moving like a machine. Val Kilmer is functional but he lacks the star power. The tension is building up to an exciting operation in Dubai but a turn in the middle stalls the movie. Instead of ramping up the tension, the movie chugs along and chugs along. I don't understand why he doesn't go to the higher ups with the information. Some of the plot points leave me a bit puzzled. I think a more accomplished action director would have been better. Also the ending is a mess of twists that are highly questionable.
Spartan is yet again one of the many Val Kilmer underrated movies. This guy is a brilliant actor, and i cant understand why his movies are so so underrated. Another spy movie, (i just love spy movies cos they have such cool plots..) this one is about a kidnapped girl, and kilmer's determination to find her. He runs into all sorts of obstacles before running out of steam at one point when his bosses tell him the girl he is looking out for is dead. then suddenly the girl's mother shows up and convinces him that the girl is alive. then he takes up matters in his own hands and defies his orders to rescue the girl. it is then he learns the sinister plot for the kidnapping. how an innocent girl had been turned to a whore for her father's displeasure.
a superb plot undoubtedly and kilmer overcomes all odds yet again. it is true he may never win an academy award but doesn't stop him from being one of the best actors of the last decade. William h Macy is also impressive. but the young lady portraying the kidnapped girl was awesome. she had very little time on screen but she stamped her authority all over it. absolutely mind blowing.
Just cryptic enough to keep you guessing, and for some viewers that may qualify as a night out. But Mamet's gamesmanship was more fun when it was less eager to look important.
