After witnessing the brutal murders of a convenience store owner and his son, firefighter Jeremy Coleman barely escapes with his life. As he is forced to testify against the crime lord, Hagan, he is placed in the witness protection program under the watch of the U.S. Marshals. When his new identity becomes compromised Jeremy is forced to take an unexpected course of action in order to get his life back and save the lives of those he loves.
A fireman takes an unexpected course of action when a man whom he's been ordered to testify against, after being held up at a local convenience store, threatens him.
As a action films, I can appreciate this film more than most (And it does help to enjoy them to like this film (Although no one can say it is a "Lifetime" Movie). This movie is much better than the throwaway Steven Seagal straight to DVD releases, so don't get fooled by DVD. To be fair, Bruce Willis is a supporting player, so don't get tricked either. This film is essentially a version of "Cobra" which is a classic from 1986 featuring Sylvester Stallone vs a psychopath named "Slasher" (Brian Thompson), and his gang. This character is very much like David Hagen (Vincent D'Onofrio), from this film, who is a Neo-Nazi out to kill people (Particularly minorities) and essentially create a "New World Order". The Hagen character is one of the most vile and evil characters you will ever find in a movie. In some ways he is worse, then "Slasher" because he is showed as a logical thinking individual instead of a psychopath, without showing some back story saying he was abused as a child or something to explain his actions. Against him is Long Beach, California fireman Jerry Coleman (Josh Duhamel), who sees the murder of an African-American store owner and his son almost for fun (In a way far worse than the murder of a Pakistani store owner in "Four Brothers."). Spoilers ahead: He essentially becomes Chuck Norris from "Invasion USA" to take out the gang, because he needs to protect himself and "The ones he loves" (His fellow fireman and Talia Durham (Rosario Dawson) who is his handler in "Witness Protection" (He is being hidden so he can testify in Court against the gang))). Of course, early on when Jerry and Talia meet in New Orleans (That is where he is being hidden) she becomes his girlfriend (Why else refer to herself as a "California Girl" but never visited there?)). The best part is at the end where Jerry firetraps Hagen and the gang in their hideout and is watching them die, but unknown to him, they kidnapped Talia and he had to rescue her. In the ending she kills Hagen and the guy who kidnapped her, and she had to follow his earlier advice about "Trusting me, to get you out" (He mentioned that in New Orleans and about how he understands everything about fire: Where to go (And not to go etc)). So the final scene shows them getting away, but where they end up is still a mystery? My guess is he goes back to being a fireman, and she transfers to Long Beach to be with him, but that is unsaid. I give it 9 of 10 stars. The main reason is "D'Onofrio, who steals every scene he is in. The biggest complaint in the lack of chemistry between Duhamel & Dawson. If that was there, I would have given it 10/10. No matter what, it is worth watching.
Considering that this movie went straight to DVD despite having Bruce Willis in its cast, I wasn't expecting much. But when I got a chance to see it for free after finding a DVD copy at my local library, I decided to give it a spin. Actually, unlike many user commenters here, I didn't find the movie to be terrible. To be sure, its screenplay could have gone through a few more rewrites - the love subplot feels unfinished, the main story has more than its share of predictable twists and turns, and the ending feels rushed and incomplete. Also, some of the acting leaves a lot to be desired. Josh Duhamel transformation from an ordinary Joe to a methodical killer is quite unconvincing, and Bruce Willis is downright terrible at times, phoning in a performance that obviously only took a few days to shoot. On the other hand, Vincent D'Onofrio makes his bad guy character a quite nasty piece of work, coming across as smart and scary - a deadly combination. And while a lot of the movie is predictable, I can't say I was bored at any moment. It moves along at a swift pace, and the action sequences are exciting and extremely brutal. This is far from a great movie, but if you are looking for some nonthink entertainment, it does deliver. Yes, it has some big problems, but believe me, I have seen plenty of direct to video movies that are MUCH worse than this movie.
