Orphaned high school student Rick Riker is bitten by a radioactive dragonfly, develops super powers (except for the ability to fly), and becomes a hero.
A nerdy high school student named Rick Riker (Drake Bell) got bitten by a genetically altered Dragonfly. Soon enough this student becoming stronger and various powers that he has an unexpected gift but he still can't fly yet. But a dying scientist/billionaire named Lou Landers (Christopher McDonald) and his assistant (Brent Spiner) accidentally discovered, they could suck the life of anyone that Lou pleases. But with each other, Lou takes the life from... it could only lasted him for a day. Now this evil scientist is trying to find an way into immortally. While Rick slowly becomes an crime-fighting superhero as "Dragonfly". Lou has called himself "The Hourglass". Now these two superhuman opposites have to face each other... sooner or later.
Written and Directed by Craig Mazin (Screenwriter of "Scary Movie Part 3 and 4") made an amusing, sometimes hilarious comic spoof of your favorite comic book movies like "Spiderman", "X-Men" and "The Fantastic Four". Bell does an good job making fun of the role Tobey Maguire in "Spiderman". But Leslie Nielsen and Robert Joy as Stephen Hawking certainly has the best moments. Although an box office disappointment... "Superhero Movie" should do well on Blu-ray and DVD.
DVD has an sharp anamorphic Widescreen (1.78:1) transfer and an good Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. DVD has an reasonable funny commentary track by the filmmakers, two featurettes, alternate ending and the original theatrical trailer. Although i never seen the PG-13 version, this is the Extended Version with seven minutes of additional footage. There's some familiar faces in funny cameos. There's the occasional flaw, here and there for this type of movie. But for those.. who loves spoof comedies, they will certainly enjoy this one. (*** ½/*****).
I happened to rent this movie with my sister in hopes of watching a great entertaining movie, that was humorous, however my expectations were let down. This movie was beyond disgusting and revolting for a PG-13 movie, this should have been rated R for the many mature references that went on in this movie. I wouldn't recommend allowing a 13 year old teen see this.
Even if no one under the age of 17 is watching this movie, beware of a truly stupid movie, there's no humor in the movie, just a bunch of disgusting sexual references including a small touch of pedophilia, something that shouldn't even be joked about.
I would like to know what happened to PG-13 movies, that were actually safe for actual a 13 year old? This is beyond a deplorable movie and should be re-rated.
Undiscriminating comedy fans hungering for the High School High of superhero parodies need look no further.
The Extended version of Superhero Movie features not only some more violent scenes but also several new dirty jokes that aren't included in the theatrical version. Altogether this adds to a total difference of approximately 6 minutes. Just in case you're a fan of this movie the Extended version is worth a try.
