15 Apr 2016 In women who are at average risk of breast cancer, routine screening with mammography should be initiated at 45 years of age. Screening should continue on an annual basis until 54 years of age. For women 55 years and older, biennial screening is the preferred approach, with the option to screen each year.
These recommendations are intended to apply to women who are not at increased risk of developing breast cancer and only apply to routine screening procedures. Direct evidence about the benefits of screening mammography in women aged 75 years or older is lacking. The USPSTF found adequate evidence that screening for breast cancer with mammography results in harms for women aged 40 to 74 years.
