It basically squishes the higher resolution image to fit into your display. . get better downsampling on displays with native 1080p resolution.
So you purposely output a higher resolution than what's stated and let the TV downscale it to fit. You only have X amount of pixels on a display. Changing a setting to something higher than that will not magically create more physical pixels, it will just downscale a 1920x1080 signal to the native resolution.
