Writer’s Note:
Along the graveled path is a personal journey not unlike the millions of untold stories of immigrant families that endured the dangers of crossing oceans or deserts. With little more than a dogged determination, a faith that a country formed by immigrants would, in the end, welcome them as equals. As Franklin D. Roosevelt so aptly articulated, “We are a nation of many nationalities, many races, many religions bound together by a single unity, the unity of freedom and equality. Whoever seeks to set one nationality against another, seeks to degrade all nationalities. Whoever seeks to set one race against another seeks to enslave all races. Whoever seeks to set one religion against another, seeks to destroy all religion. Americans are not defined by race, ethnicity, color or religion, but by their collective belief that being American is the shared values of freedom and equality."
Poem: Is it in the Air?
Is it in the air we breathe or struggle weaved,
come on distant shore, stand among the brave.
Left...treasured behind, ventured far and wide,
cross tumult seas n’ scorching sands, survived.
Who sayeth what separate fearless from feared?
Stout heart from feint of heart, valor lacking.
Courage or desperation drove some to seek,
complacent most deign lay beyond, the meek.
Start...leave fettered past, ahead our future,
free to experience today, dream of tomorrow.
Risk insulate life, climb upon distant chimera?
Known is despair, weighed against unknown.
It is in the air we breathe or struggle weaved,
this America, muse of my suffering incarnate.
Apparition of possibilities lay before the bane,
dream beckons, aspire yond sheltered doom.
Even as we succor what divides, separates,
give voice to discern the painful, outrageous.
Who among would deny the right of rights,
sits foundation of all we hold most sacred.
Vision embolden, trial our common legacy.
Query why we are different, we are the same?
Of mind, of heart, though uncommon visage,
breathe same air, spill same blood, die as one.
