Everything changes for Eva when she receives a life insurance check accidentally made out for $5,000,000 instead of the expected $50 thousand. She and her best friend take the money and head out for the adventure of a lifetime.
A retired and newly widowed school teacher (MacLaine), receives a life insurance check mistakenly made out for 5 million instead of 50 thousand. Her and her best friend take the vacation of their lives, while being chased by the insurance company for the wrongly denominated check. Calamity ensues in a wonderful backdrop.
Two old ladies prove that they still got the chops (Well three old ladies depending on how one feels about Demi More). Shirley MacLaine plays a recent widower whose collects her late husbands insurance check and discovers they made a typo worth five million dollars. Jessica Lange plays her down on her luck best friend who convinces her to keep the money and go on an adventure, with hilarious results.
Usually I use the word formulated when it comes to movies as a bad thing, except in Disney cartoons cause the formula works so well, but MacLaine and Lange prove that experience does come with age as they take this comedic formula and work it for everything it has too offer, making for quite a good comedy.
It's a great cast that also stars Demi Moore leaving the heavy MILF work to Jessica Lange in this film as she plays MacLaine's uptight daughter, and Billy Connolly who plays Maclaine's love interest who seems to have a case of dementia. It's only of his funnier routines.
So while overall you seen this long formatted sketch before, it does matter who's giving the punch line. Lange and Maclaine deliver.
I'm giving this a 7 because of the acting and the feel-good story. We need that nowadays, and I won't diminish it.
"Wild Oats" stars Shirley Maclaine as a widow, Eve, who receives a $5 million check from her husband's insurance when it was supposed to be $50,000 - and she knows it. After attempting to reach the insurance company and getting the runaround from their automated voice system, Maclaine and her best friend Maddie (Jessica Lange) decide to spend it.
They take off for a resort in Spain; meanwhile, the insurance company is onto them and has sent an elderly insurance man (Howard Hesseman) after Eve.
Maddie and Eve, meanwhile, are having the time of their lives, Eve with a charming old man, Chandler (Billy Connelly) and Maddie with a hot young stud (Jay Hayden).
This is somewhat predictable but the cast, which includes Demi Moore as Eve's daughter, makes it watchable.
It's a slight story and it didn't belong in a theater (though Sony disagrees - apparently it debuted on Lifetime before hitting the theaters) but I won't trash anything that makes me smile like this one did.
