A Deadly Temptress?: Mary Queen of Scots

Mary Queen of Scots is perhaps one of history's most controversial and fascinating queens. Seen by many as a traitor, an adulteress and a murderer or just the exact opposite - an innocent, sweet and good-hearted queen, who died as a martyr for her religion. This book relates the captivating story of her life, from her happy childhood in France at the illustrious and glittering French court, to her turbulent and dangerous rule in Scotland, where she struggled to survive the politics and conflicts surrounding the powerful Scottish nobility, and finally her imprisonment in England whereupon her fate became entangled with her rival queen - Elizabeth I, who would eventually sign her death warrant, after she was found guilty of plotting her assassination. Mary was a tall, beautiful woman who could not help but charm and entice the men around her. After the death of her first husband, Francis II the King of France, Mary returned to Scotland and would marry Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. After Darnley had been involved in a gruesome murder of her Italian secretary, Rizzio in front of her whilst she was heavily pregnant with their son, their relationship fell apart. Darnley was murdered the following year, and Mary married the main murder suspect months afterwards - The Earl of Bothwell. Whilst Bothwell escaped the country, Mary was imprisoned as a suspect of Darnley's murder, and was forced to abdicate as queen. Escaping her imprisonment, Mary hoped to find protection by throwing herself at the mercy of Queen Elizabeth I of England. However, Mary had not always entreated Elizabeth with the due respect she deserved - claiming that she herself was the true Queen of England, declaring Elizabeth an illegitimate daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Therefore, Elizabeth did not receive Mary with the warmest of welcomes. Whilst Mary was imprisoned by Elizabeth, she became involved in numerous plots and intrigues not only to win her freedom, but to seize the English throne. Was Mary really a deadly temptress? And if so, was this really such a bad thing? Perhaps she was fully justified in ridding herself of her iniquitous and depraved husband Darnley, and could only plot against Elizabeth, to save herself.
