It is possible to create pdf in PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 format, create a multi-page pdf, resize and rotate each image, convert each image to grayscale, and set trim and bleed size to each page of pdf, for free.
You can produce PDF/X files, but not PDF/X1 As I recall PDF/X-1 requires all colours to be specified in CMYK or Gray and older versions of pdfwrite couldn't do that, the current version can, but needs some other work to make it compatible with PDF/X-1, I'm not certain its worth the effort. See this bug report
PDF/X. The PDF/X format is a subset of PDF used for pre-print processing of electronic documents. It is certified by the International Organization for Standardization as Standard ISO 15930-1:2001. It, in turn, comes in three versions: PDF/X-1:1999, PDF/X-1:2001, and PDF/X-1a:2003 (it was derived from PDF V1.4).
ISO 15929 (which was withdrawn in March 2008 and no longer is an official standard) specifies the guidelines and principles for the development of PDF/X standards. ISO 15930 defines the specific implementations: ISO 15930-1:2001: PDF/X-1a:2001, blind exchange in CMYK + spot colors, based on PDF 1.3; ISO 15930-2:
Convert to PDF/X, PDF/A, or PDF/E using a wizard. Choose Tools > Print Production. Click Preflight. In the Preflight dialog box, click Standards. Select Save As PDF/X, Save As PDF/A, or Save As PDF/E, and then click Continue. Select the desired version and click Continue.
