In a valiant but pointless attempt to cheer up their freshly-dumped friend and former Dungeons and Dragons legend, Joe, two enthusiastic Live Action Role Players--Eric, a 27-level Grand Sorcerer in the making, and Hung, a medieval Master Rogue--drag their sad companion to a large-scale LARP campaign in the middle of a forest. However, things will soon spin out of control, as a malevolently cryptic dark incantation from the pages of a seemingly innocent prop book of spells, inadvertently summons a demonic succubus bent on destruction. Now, try to stop a slaughterous extra-dimensional being with several foam sticks and a handful of plastic swords.
Live-action role players conjure up a demon from Hell by mistake and they must deal with the consequences.
This was one of those films I found myself being able to follow whilst replying to texts. I had to consciously put my phone on Airplane Mode to avoid the temptation of zoning out. It's not that it was bad, it was just so easy to follow through the second act that I didn't feel the need to concentrate.
There were some small, insignificant points in the film that I enjoyed that I feel, were they consistent throughout, I would've enjoyed the film a lot more. Maybe even loved it. Mainly the humour (especially when they broke character in the game), the gross out moments, the moments when the person's character came through. Otherwise it was very mediocre.
Analysing it could result in seeing a metaphor for a demon of a girlfriend that literally eats the life out of things which I quite liked. And the fact that he defeated the beast with the music he loved and she hated solidified this for me.
I had pretty high hopes for this movie. The premise seemed good, I love geek humor, and Peter Dinklage is nothing short of awesome. Unfortunately, the movie fell flat on pretty much all fronts.
The characters were boring and had no depth. The plot was non-existent. The paranormal stuff felt out of place, and the low budget special effects made it look like a campy B movie (but not in a good way). Majority of the jokes were neither geeky nor especially funny.
If you're into LARPing, you *might* get something out of this. For others the movie will most likely be a disappointment. If you haven't seen them yet, I'd recommend checking out Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (2010) or The Cabin in the Woods (2012) for a similar (but better) comedy/horror experience.
Those who’ve had Knights of Badassdom on their radar all this time are likely to get some mild amusement and satisfaction out of seeing the LARPing community depicted as something other than viral video fodder. Everyone else will find it a frustrating exercise of missed opportunities, as rough around the edges as the fake Frank Frazetta painting on your cousin’s van.
Knights of Badassdom is a action horror comedy starring Summer Glau and Peter Dinklage in which all hell breaks loose for a group of dungeons and dragons roleplayers, during a dungeons and dragons enactment in the woods, when they discover that a spell book they bought online, is a book that summons demons and they unwittingly unleash a demon from medieval legend, that goes on a rampage in the woods. a5c7b9f00b
