Batman learns he has a violent, unruly pre-teen son, secretly raised by the terrorist group the League of Assassins.
Ra's AL Ghul is dead, slain by former League of Assassin Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke. His victory is not without a cost, the price his right eye; taken by Ra's own grandson Damien. Fearing for her sons' safety Talia AL Ghul decides now is the time for the boy to meet his father. Half a world away a trail of chemical plant heists finds the Batman catching the culprit in the very act. The thief is Killer Croc, but Croc has changed mutated by some unseen hand. With the shocking appearance of the lovely but deadly Talia, Croc is quickly taken down. Back at Gotham harbor Talia gives the Detective the news of Ra's fate along with the surprise of introducing him to Damien, their son. Talia sets out to handle Slade while Damien falls under the guardianship of Batman. The young man possess great fighting prowess but his cocky self confidence creates friction back at Wayne Manor. Batman's investigation into Croc's actions leads him to the home of Dr. Kirk Langstrom, creator of the Man-bat formula. But Langstrom is merely another pawn serving the ambitions of the League of Assassins and their new leader Deathstroke. Deathstroke takes Langstrom's family hostage moving up the time-table for product delivery. Meanwhile Damien using the Batcave's resources conducts his own manhunt. One of Slade's lieutenant's likes to spend his off time in Gotham. Damien combats the traitor but before he can deliver the final blow, is stopped by Nightwing. Batman impressed by Damien's ability and drive allows him to take up the mantel of Robin. Soon the two are hot on the trail of Deathstroke who is aiming to amass an army of ninja Man-bats. Can Batman teach his new sidekick what it takes to be a hero, leaving behind his murderous past? Or will his greatest challenge yet prove to be for the very soul of the son of Batman.
This is the single worst Batman movie to date. I truly believe this is worse than Batman and Robin, because at least that film is funny.
The plot makes no sense, the villain's motivations are frankly ridiculously stupid and nonsensical, the fights are uninspired, Damian Wayne is at his worst in terms of insufferable characterisation and insipid, mean-spirited dialogue, the voice acting ranges from fairly good to the worst I've heard in professional animation.
Deathstroke is changed from an incredible and intelligent fighter into a pathetic, idiotic bumbler who gets knocked out with one punch from Batman. The supposedly unstoppable army of Man-Bats are actually less effective and far dumber than normal human beings, and stopped in one of the weakest anti-climaxes I've ever seen. The plot is so poorly handled that I honestly started to laugh out loud at what were supposed to be tense scenes. That's not even getting into the scene between Batman and Talia which seems to suggest the writers are rape apologists--yes, Bruce states he was drugged and raped by Talia, but that it was "not all bad" which is undoubtedly the most horribly awful thing I've heard in a DC movie.
Bottom line, I only recommend this to people if you want a truly hilariously inept film to watch and laugh about with your friends, which is precisely what I did after trying to watch it on my own.
This is my first ever review of an animated film, which is kind of strange considering I have seen pretty much every DC and Marvel film released in the past 15 years as well as a lot of Disney and Pixar. Anyway that's neither here nor there,back onto the review.
The film is based on a 2006 story arc written by Grant Morrison who has written for so many characters and arcs isn't surprising his work is being adapted into films.
The film starts off with a huge training camp being destroyed that we know is owned by the Al Ghul family, a young boy and Mother escape to the boys Father, who turns out to be none other than Batman himself. Batman takes his newly revealed son under his wing deciding to train and protect him from what has already happened.
Bruce allows Damien to join him and Robin, in fighting crime, but keeping the criminals alive in typical Batman tradition, throughout this time a huge development happens which will soon have a incredible impact on the plot.
The film has a pretty short run time, which isn't to bad due to the fact we do not really need that much characters time, however I would like to have had seen some more on screen relationship progression between Bruce and Damien. Also they did make Deathstroke a bit less of a badass than his usual-self, I mean he gets a beat down more than once by a teen none the less, however that does add to Damien being a very skilled fighter.
Overall, the film is a very enjoyable watch full of Action, Ninjutsu style acrobatics and katana based fighting resulting in lots of violence and gore which surprised me when watching because I didn't realise the rating. The voice acting overall is pretty good besides Batman, Jason O'Mara seems to just be reading his lines not putting any emotion or passion into them, the rest of the cast is pretty good nothing special. It does have a strange animation about it, it almost feels like an 80s maybe 90s style look to it, I enjoyed it seen a few people complaining about though.
