During the Napoleonic Wars, a brash British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America.
In April 1805 during the Napoleonic Wars, H.M.S. Surprise, a British frigate, is under the command of Captain Jack Aubrey. Aubrey and the Surprise's current orders are to track and capture or destroy a French privateer named Acheron. The Acheron is currently in the Atlantic off South America headed toward the Pacific in order to extend Napoleon's reach of the wars. This task will be a difficult one as Aubrey quickly learns in an initial battle with the Acheron that it is a bigger and faster ship than the Surprise, which puts the Surprise at a disadvantage. Aubrey's single-mindedness in this seemingly impossible pursuit puts him at odds with the Surprise's doctor and naturalist, Stephen Maturin, who is also Aubrey's most trusted advisor on board and closest friend. Facing other internal obstacles which have resulted in what they consider a string of bad luck, Aubrey ultimately uses Maturin's scientific exploits to figure out a way to achieve his and the ship's seemingly impossible goal.
Truth is Peter Weir has made some good efforts over the years at making a great movie and in my opinion has not really made one...oh I hear the groaning and to some degree I agree...Dead Poets Society was pretty close to the mark but I don't share the general enthusiasm for The Truman Show and...well that is all past and "Commander" is now and it is a hand full.
Running two hours and eighteen minutes it passes the true test of such length movies...it passed very quickly!
There will be plenty said about Russel Crowe, and as much as I detest his too much macho off screen persona, I got to give it to him the man can play the role of a hero.
But the award winners of this piece are a really neat young fellow named Max Perkis who plays Midshipman Blakney and for a fact steals the show. His partner in this "theft" is ship surgeon and naturalist Dr. Stephen Maturin, played by Paul Bettany. I thought this role would over reach Mr. Bettany's range but I was surprised and really glad to see him reach and show he is truly a dramatic actor of merit. He and young Perkis are a one two punch that carry the load of a very large and expensive show.
The editing is seamless and the special effects are dazzling. You can laugh and cry and pull for the good guys and all the other great things required of a high seas adventure.
I mean isn't that what it is supposed to be? Sure it is and it hits the target dead center! A solid nine and I give few nines and I still am looking for the "10"....maybe next year? But this one is good and Mr. Weir deserves the awards he will get for the effort.
I saw Master and Commander earlier today and came out of the cinema slightly disappointed.
The acting was good enough, storyline reminiscent of many sea chase movies - Sink the Bismark comes to mind - sound was superb, effects were great, so what was wrong?
Maybe I wasn't expecting a 'Boys Own' type story. (I haven't read the books). Perhaps it was the dreadful attempt that Mr Crowe makes at violin playing - listen to the music and watch Russells' playing at the same time - unintentionally hilarious!
I got another laugh out of the sudden appearance on board of the cast wearing whalers outfits. Where did they come from? Maybe the local Galapagos branch of their favorite department store.
This was supposedly a serious movie. I seemed to be laughing in the wrong places.
A really annoying trait in todays movies is the close-up, fast moving, blurry fight scenes where nothing can really be seen except flashes of light on the screen. No wonder audiences couldn't tell who was French and who was British.
As sea-faring movies go my all time favorite is 'Ghosts in the Noonday Sun' close behind is 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. Johnny Depps' acting in the latter was superb.
So, Master and Commander or Pirates of the Caribbean - which is the lesser of 2 weevils? Work it out for yourself. After all, who got the Oscar nomination for best actor and who didn't?
6/10 overall - 8/10 for unintentional hilarity.
On a production of this magnitude, few actors have the presence to assert themselves above the cacophony, but Crowe carries the film with the rare combination of charisma and brute masculinity that has made him a star.
