Effective instructional routines that emphasize learning through discourse will engage students, meet their individual needs, and help them develop as learners of mathematics and across all disciplines. OUSD envisions that every math classroom provides daily opportunities for students to demonstrate the Standards for
4 Dec 2016 I've been digging into the book Routines for Reasoning, by Grace Kelemanik, Amy Lucenta and Susan Janssen Creighton. The book focuses on instructional routines -- activities that use a consistent structure to reach a range of mathematical goals. Here are three quotes from the book that have framed my
24 Jul 2016 I spent my morning sessions at Twitter Math Camp working with David Wees, Kaitlin Ruggiero, and Jasper DeAntonio on the Contemplate then Calculate instructional routine: experiencing it, unpacking it, and rehearsing it as teachers. I'm excited to put it into action this year, and I learned a ton in the
Instructional Routines are different because they are designed to organize thinking. Instructional Routines are both flexible (the math changes depending on your goals) and consistent (the format remains the same).
9 Mar 2017 Kristin Gray and Teaching Channel have just launched a new blog series on elementary math instructional routines. Kristin will take us inside her planning, enactment, and reflection on a new instructional routine each month. She will be sharing classroom video, planning sheets, her reflection on the
29 Aug 2016 Inspired by Contemplate then Calculate, I am planning on using 9 routines in my classroom this year. Some of these are greatly inspired by others and some of them I developed. For each routine, I have a powerpoint template than I can adapt for each time I use the routine. For some of the routines, I have
A number of researchers have recently begun to identify certain instructional routines, aligned with the rigor of the State Standards and the NCTM Mathematics Teaching Practices, that “can significantly affect the quality of teaching and subsequent learning of students" (Heibert & Morris, 2012). Instructional routines are short

17 Mar 2016 Instructional routines have allowed our curriculum team to rapidly develop mathematical tasks to fit into these instructional routines because we don't need to communicate the routine separately for every task. The routine stays the same (but see point #4) over time while different tasks are enacted within the routine.
