Set in the year 1999 during the last days of the old millennium, the movie tells the story of Lenny Nero, an ex-cop who now deals with data-discs containing recorded memories and emotions. One day he receives a disc which contains the memories of a murderer killing a prostitute. Lenny investigates and is pulled deeper and deeper in a whirl of blackmail, murder and rape. Will he survive and solve the case?
Lenny Nero deals in dreams. Formerly an LAPD vice cop, he now deals in illegal 'squid' recordings - recordings made directly from the cerebral cortex of the participant, which allow the viewer to feel and experience everything the participant experiences as if they were there. One of life's perpetual losers, he ekes out a lonely, miserable existence at the end of the millennium, still pathetically yearning for his beautiful ex-girlfriend Faith, a beautiful singer, and is dependent on his friend Macey, who both loves him unquestioningly and despairs for him completely, in equal measure. But Lenny's life is about to be shattered; when he is anonymously sent the recording of the brutal rape and murder of a prostitute he is acquainted with, he and Macey soon find themselves reluctantly embroiled in a dark web of murder, blackmail and intrigue amid the civil unrest surrounding the suspicious death of an influential, politically active rap singer. Lenny and Macey are soon running from Faith's brutal manager, Philo Gant, and a pair of menacing police officers, as they try to uncover the connection between the two and stay alive long enough to see in the millennium.
Strange Days was a very odd and confusing movie. There were many parts where I had to rewind and watch them again to actually understand what was going on. When the film ended, I realised that it actually was quite a good movie. It also has a nice cast and soundtrack to it. If you're the kind of person who can understand the most confusing movies, you should see this.
I have never seen a movie as fast and as gripping as "Strange Days". Although it's obviously an action movie not designed to make you think, there are scenes I think you better watch with an open mind for the future - cause I imagine it to become sort of what Kathrin Bigelow shows us here: People starving for their "old love" and selling experiences of others because they cannot get their own real experiences.
Besides that, I really do like films where sore losers (like Ralph Fiennes here) become the heroes, together with strong women like Angela Bassett.
Due to the combination of violence and sex, approx. 11 seconds were removed from the British Version. No, there were only the two rogue cops, one of whom had killed Jeriko-One in a fit of anger after being goaded by him during a routine traffic stop. He and his partner then went about trying to cover their tracks by attempting to kill Iris who had witnessed it all and destroy the recording of the incident which she gave to Lenny. Max made up the story of the death squad to prevent Lenny from going to the police with the recording and everything he knewJeriko-One was killed by two rogue cops which was witnessed by Iris. Max then killed Iris on behalf of Gant. Gant had been using Iris to spy on Jeriko-One and knew that if his music artists discovered he was secretly recording their every move he would be ruined. Gant also requests that Max kill Faith, however Max is secretly having an affair with Faith so he takes the opportunity to kill Gant instead and attempts to frame Lenny for both his and Iris' murder a5c7b9f00b
