3 Apr 2014 - Now if you read on your tyre sidewall this confusing sequence: 28-622, 700 x 28C, 28 x 1 5/8 x 1 1/8, you at least have a useful deciphering reference. The rim diameter is 622mm and rim + tyre outer diameter is around 700mm (the total outer diameter will depend on the height of the specific tyre used).
2 Oct 2012 A traditional 700c tyre has an inner diameter of 622mm, a 26-inch mountain bike tyre is 559mm, and a 29-inch mountain bike also has a 622mm diameter. So on a tyre wall you will also find bead measurements; for example, 23-622, meaning the tyre's inflated width is 23mm, and its internal diameter is 622mm.
Some rims are also now marked according to ISO with their bead diameter and internal section (width where the tyre fits): e.g. 622–17 for the size usually fitted to touring and hybrid bikes. If the rim is not marked with its bead diameter you can read this from the tyre – it's the one dimension they have in common.
