About the Author’s Studies is the opening essay in Rosmini’s Introduzione alla
Filosfia. Written towards the end of his life and after the publication of many
works on philosophy, the essay first deals with the aims he had in writing those
works. He wanted to combat error. According to him, we tend to clutch at the
outward show of good rather than the true good. In the struggle down the ages
against error, knowledge of truth has increased. Rosmini wishes to systematise
these truths and present a philosophy that can serve as a basis for all branches
of knowledge. Finally, granted religious faith, he wants to present philosophy
as an aid to theology because there is no opposition between revelation and
philosophy.
