A mysterious black, sleek automobile terrorizes everyone it comes into contact with in a small town in Utah. The local sheriff may be the only person who can stop this menace which has been possessed by pure evil.
Near the small desert town of Santa Ynez, a mysterious black car runs down two teenage bicyclers en route to camp, then it hit-and-runs a hitchhiker with local Amos Clements as witness. Sheriff Everett puts his men on alert and plants road blocks in the area to arrest the murderer, but soon he himself falls victim to the car. Sheriff Wade Parent leads the hunt for the vehicle that threatens their town and seems impossible to locate. When his beloved girlfriend, teacher Lauren Humphries, challenges the driver in a cemetery, the car hunts her in her home. Wade realizes he might be dealing with supernatural powers.
I don't know if it was deliberate on the part of the producers or not of The Car, but just what was the issue that this possessed vehicle had with the good citizens of this small Utah town? And why was it that it only just toyed with Deputy James Brolin instead of just outright killing him as it did others?
We never get a reason for all the mayhem and murder The Car causes. But this driverless vehicle appears out of nowhere and starts running down random citizens. In the name of God knows why?
Even some of the worst horror films are always a mystery, a mystery of the occult as it were, but still a mystery to solve. We get nothing of that here. Maybe because half the law enforcement community in this county get done in by the vehicle including Sheriff John Marley.
That left me kind of up in the air after the rather spectacular conclusion and desperate measure taken by law enforcement to put a stop to The Car. Not a satisfactory end for me.
This souped up coup ain't no dodge charger!, The car is all in it's own class of a so called horror film in director elliot silverstein's sort of a reworking of steven spielberg's 1971 "DUEL' in which we never get to see the driver. but brings me up to the $64.000 question: what make and model was "the car"? is it a lincoln, a mercedes, or a cadillac itself? out of the dust and dunes of the desert she revs her engine with a vengeance in a town without traffic lights, she,s hell bent for death to those who cross her path. so all you jay-walkers and hitchhikers get yer butts back on that sidewalk! This sleak black machine makes it's own road any where it want's...even in your living room! but 'THE CAR" alway's get's the best of my idea of the ultimate vehicle: genuine fully illuminated chrome rims, wide steelbelted self-sealing tires, extra heavy chrome plated bumpers,bullet proof tinted glass, duel pipes and blasting air horns along with it's supercharged turbo engine would definitely be my pick of the lot, and that's not to mention my "pick of the flick" at the check out counter at the local video store.
The demonic car in this film was designed by George Barris, who specialized in custom cars and who worked on a number of film and television projects, including the car driven by TV's "The Munsters", Herbie "The Love Bug", and the vehicle driven by the heroes in "Ghostbusters". For "The Car", Barris modified a 1971 Lincoln Continental Mark III. a5c7b9f00b
