In DOS memory management, expanded memory is a system of bank switching that provided additional memory to DOS programs beyond the limit of conventional memory (640 KB). Expanded memory is an umbrella term for several incompatible technology variants. The process was known as bank switching and involved expanding memory beyond that which was directly addressed by the processor. EMS was designed for disk operating system (DOS) software programs requiring the additional memory. EMS is also known as expanded memory, LIM EMS, LIM 4.0 or EMS 4.0. Expanded Memory Specification (EMS), or expanded memory, is a technique for utilizing more than 1MB of main memory in DOS -based computers. The limit of 1MB is built into the DOS operating system. The upper 384K is reserved for special purposes, leaving just 640K of conventional memory for programs. Another legacy feature that the support has been deprecated beginning from Windows Vista is EMS or Expanded Memory Specification. In Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 and other newer Windows versions, EMS is not normally available to. There is, however, an older standard for accessing memory above 1 MB which is called expanded memory. It uses a protocol called the Expanded Memory Specification or EMS. EMS was originally created to overcome the 1 MB addressing limitations of the first generation 8088 and 8086 CPUs. In the mid-80s, when these. I'd assumed my system simply didn't support expanded memory -- I've seen that on some computers. But either vDos is accessing it somehow, or it's doing a great job of emulating it. If it's emulating it, I'll give up the hunt for a way to enable it under 4DOS, but if it's accessing real expanded memory, I'm. (EMS) An IBM PC memory paging scheme enabling access to memory other than conventional memory in real mode. Expanded memory is provided through a page frame of at least 64 kilobytes in the reserved memory address region. Access to this memory is provided by an expanded memory manager (EMM) software. If you run old DOS software, you may wonder about EMS vs XMS, or expanded vs extended memory. Here's what you need to know about both old memory standards. So im trying to get Aladdin for DOS running on my 9x PC. It needs EMS memory. I've looked all over the internet about EMM386 and config.sys and what not. When loading himem.sys the memory is configured as XMS memory (eXtended Memory System). This is the prefered method ! But in the 80's there was a second standard for additional memory called EMS (Expanded Memory System). emm386 can now simulate EMS within the XMS. Today some programs still want EMS. Expanded memory, also know as EMS (Expanded Memory Specification) was a method used to increase the 640KB upper limit of MS-DOS to 1MB using a gated memory riser card. Instead of attempting this method, you may prefer to try a slightly less drastic method first. Go to this site's general discussion of enabling EMS memory in Windows Me, and try method (a). However, if you have an emergency startup disk, and you don't mind experimenting, it may be easier to try the method.
