Follows the epic Biblical story of the Resurrection, as told through the eyes of a non-believer. Clavius, a powerful Roman Military Tribune, and his aide Lucius, are tasked with solving the mystery of what happened to Yahshua in the weeks following the crucifixion, in order to disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent an uprising in Jerusalem.
In 33 AD, a Roman Tribune in Judea is tasked to find the missing body of Jesus Christ who rose from the dead.
This is a very good movie. It's not exactly the Biblical telling of what happened after the crucifixion but it is a good and powerful story as seen fictionally through the eyes of Pontius Pilate's right hand man Clavis.
"Risen" is the story of Christ's resurrection done mainly in the perspective of the Romans. It's admittedly intriguing to see the earthly political aspect to one of the most celebrated religious events. The movie is actually split into two parts, one resembles a detective thriller as the Romans search for Christ's body and the latter part consists of the journey before Christ's ascension told in a more traditional manner.
It's a nice angle to cover the story with elaborate viewpoint of the Romans, they are trying to quell the uprising and protect their own political standings at the same time. Clavius (Joseph Fiennes) is the leading investigator who is originally unsympathetic and indifference towards the whole affair, but slowly begins to question the authenticity of this prophet.
Tinkering with mystery aspect, the first half is actually interesting as Clavious prowls the streets of Jerusalem to bring light into the matter. The set-up is pretty well done and the feel of the old city is certainly present. However, it bogs down by frequent banter of propaganda and it piles on top of the necessary narrative.
The second part is when Clavius finally faces the fact that a man might just be revived. He struggles with this in a very resounding fashion. Joseph Fiennes does what he can to portray the weary soldier as he finds new possible faith. The acting falters a bit because then it reverts back to the ordinary disciple path and the investigation part doesn't really result in inspiring event it wants to be.
There are a couple of shining moments in "Risen" but it still persists in the same formula, which is not entirely bad, but it's less monumental than it aspires to be.
As played by Fiennes, who has the aquiline face and piercing eyes of Max Van Sydow, Clavius is no pushover. You believe his disbelief, so when it wavers, yours might as well.
