This British movie is about a group of inept criminals who decide to rob a bank so they can save their grandfather's retirement home from being demolished by developers. Meanwhile on another building site some workers dig up an old graveyard and they get bitten by the "undead" which sets off a chain reaction. Then the bank robbers are cornered by the police while in the process of the robbery, but when they exit they find that they are all dead as a result of the horde of zombies. They have to get to the retirement home before the zombies do!
A gang of bank robbers fight their way out of a zombie-infested London.
Very modern zombie horror / comedy with a British twist is actually better than expected, and is in fact quite a bit of fun. It's often genuinely amusing, with an excellent cast playing the material for everything that it's worth. The veterans on hand are the most fun, and funniest; you wouldn't expect to see them in a movie of this kind, and "Cockneys vs Zombies" is all the better for it. Despite the plethora of digital gore - which is very much par for the course these days - there are some ingenious gags. Best of all, this movie does have a heart underneath all of the action and bloody violence.
Rasmus Hardiker and Harry Treadaway play Terry and Andy, two young punks who plan a bank robbery so that they can save the retirement home where their grandfather (Alan Ford) and his associates live. But the plans of everybody in London go straight to Hell when some long forgotten tomb is unearthed, and legions of the living dead find plenty of sustenance on hand.
The characters are often thoroughly engaging, even trigger happy weapons junkie Mental Mickey (Ashley Thomas). Our two leads are quite likable, and also endearing herself to the audience (or at least this viewer) is their cousin Katy (Michelle Ryan), who's very tough and adaptable. It comes as no surprise that she becomes a zombie fighter par excellence. Ford performs with gusto as the Granddad (just don't let him catch you calling him that). Honor Blackman is wonderful as his friend Peggy.
This viewer wouldn't exactly call "Cockneys vs Zombies" a breath of fresh air in this overcrowded zombie sub genre, but it's so lively, well paced, and funny, that it overcomes very familiar plotting.
A comic highlight: Hamish (Richard Briers), who uses a walker, attempting to out "run" pursuing zombies.
Eight out of 10.
I am not really a big fan of zombie-movies. I love horror, but zombies never really you know, never fascinated me or whatever. Zombies and werewolves. Anyhow! The premise for this movie is promising, and Alan Ford is in it! (That's 'Bricktop' from 'Snatch' for those of you who didn't know) I love Snatch and I love Bricktop, but that's not the point here.
Cockneys vs Zombies would have been a real treat if it wasn't for one little thing. One small, but important detail. They don't use real guns that fire blanks. (Well, in some scenes they do, but they don't consistently use real blank-firing weapons) Why!!? WHYY?? After CGI got simple and cheap to do relatively good, some movie makers think it's a good idea to use CGI muzzle flashes for shooting in their movies. But that's NOT A GOOD IDEA. Anyone with a smidgen of knowledge about firing guns knows that when you fire a gun there's recoil, a part of the gun moves, and a shell-casing is thrown out. Now, in some scenes they use blank-firing-guns, but in other scenes the sound and muzzle flash is just done in post, and oh my it just drags this otherwise very entertaining movie down. Firing a fully automatic weapon with no recoil what so ever, and not a single shell-casing..? Please! Some of the editing is pretty poor too, especially with the shooting. SHAME!
When you make a movie where shooting plays a big role, you have to use real guns! (with blanks of course)
OK, other than that the movie is entertaining, with good gore and a couple of funny moments.
Matthias Hoene allows the cockney swears to flow as deliriously as the truly convincing blood splatter, offering a few unexpected gut-busters along the way.
