Thomas Beckett is a no-nonsense Marine. He is a gunnery master sergeant "Gunny," with lots of wear and tear, specializing in carrying point on two-man sniper teams in the jungles of Panama. A veteran sniper, Gunny has at least 74 confirmed kills. In his long career, he lost several spotters; he carries these Marine's spare dog tags on a ring which he employs like worry beads. Some Marines believe Beckett is callous about his lost comrades, but the dog tags are like metal scabs over wounds that will never totally heal. On a particularly vital mission, Beckett has to team with Richard Miller, a wet-behind-the-ears NSA desk jockey. The Feds believe the hype that he is a crack shot due to an Olympic silver medal, but Gunny can figuratively smell his inexperience. Gunny is certain when Miller takes credit for a kill he did not complete. Beckett immediately assesses that Miller has never had a single kill. Although Miller tries to pull rank on Beckett, Gunny treats him like a young puppy, but without using a rolled-up newspaper. The sniper code is "one kill, one shot." The real question is: who is going to get shot and who is going to kill?
A US Marine sniper is partnered with a SWAT member to take out rebel leaders in the jungles of Panama.
I don't particularly like Billy Zane becuz he looks like he could play a drag queen. But he's a rich-boy sniper here with NO kills. He out-ranks Berenger who has LOTS of kills & the 2 go at each other throughout till the end of the film when Zane finally 'feels the rush' & achieves a kill. Then he saves Berenger from the enemy drug-lords.
It's a sad thing that 'sniping' is all Berenger's got while Zane has a fiance to go home to. But that's probably why he's so good at his job. He focuses on it & he does it & that's it.
The jungle scenery is appropriate here but after awhile, it gets pretty boring. There's really no one else to hone in on except these 2 in the jungle. SNIPER's not my favorite film of Berenger's but I'm glad I got to see it so I got a SNIPER's eyeview of it all.
When you want intense combat, you turn to Tom Berenger (Platoon). Here he plays a sniper in the jungle going after rebels and drug lords. Forget that the reason they are going really makes them murderers. It's just the way things have always been done.
Life's a bitch, so he gets a green office type (Billy Zane) to help on the mission. He may shoot well, but he has never killed anyone.
The film is in the hands of Luis Llosa, who stunk up Anaconda. He doesn't do much better here, but Berenger makes the movie worthwhile.
Sure, it may be a little long - who wants to see a lot of walking through the jungle - but is is good, tense action when the time is right
Both versions exhibit a different cutting sequence. Concerning the cutting of various scenes, the R-Rated version is faster and more suspenseful than the UK version. With the exception of the censorship of one scene of violence, only scenes are missing that were slowing the film down and did not add anything important to the story. a5c7b9f00b
