Mallory and Miller are back. It seems that there was traitor with them at Navarone, whom they thought was executed. But it seems that not only was he not executed, and he was not a traitor but a German spy. Intelligence believes he made it to Yugoslavia and is now with the Partisans. So, Mallory and Miller being the only ones who can positively identify him are sent along with a unit called Force 10, which is led by Colonel Barnsby, who objects to their presence. It seems that Force 10 has a mission of their own which Mallory and Miller know nothing about. When their plane is shot and most of the team is killed, they mistakenly believe that some of the locals they meet are Partisans but in reality are German Allies, so they are taken prisoner, and have to convince the German commander that they are not spies or else they will be killed. A fiction written by the same Alistair MacLean as "The Guns of Navarone," but more credibly and closer to reality. The pleasure of seeing again the charming Robert Shaw, Edward Fox (not as great as in "The Day of the Jackal"), Barbara Bach(better here than in other productions), Franco Nero (not in one of his best roles). Richard Kiel is very efficient here (better than the two Bonds), and Harrison Ford is natural, but not exactly what can be called a great actor. I've just seen the film and I can't believe how bad it was. The plot contains awful inconsistencies and improbable, stupid sequences. Here are the major ones: 1. When Weaver gets on the plane the team fails to report that to the leader. This is contrary to what a well-trained soldier would have done. (And Weaver would probably have been thrown out of the plane instantly as a danger to the mission.) 2. A team of carefully chosen specialists were totally wrong about the chances of blowing up the bridge. It's unbelievable how dumb those Yankees are! Luckily enough a smart fellow (Miller) comes up with a brilliant solution within a twenty-minutes inspection, those smart asses in HQ weren't able to invent in days. 3. Weaver has an interesting conversation with his leader about his emotional life just as the enemy is drawing near - very near. Then he isn't punished in any way. (Would have been shot normally). 4.Mallory knows all the time that Leskovar is a traitor but he lets him come along on a mission to a German base where it would be easiest for him to give the team away. 5. Miller does not tell his companions how the dam explosives are supposed to work. As a result they nearly blow themselves up, but somehow manage to escape and then just have a good laugh (no grievances whatsoever). That T-34s "act" as German tanks (Pazer IVs? Panthers?) is in this context just a minor source of hilarity. The plot of Force 10 is banally improbable. Guy Hamilton's direction is sluggish and the camera work, by Chris Challis, makes the least of the picturesque locations in the mountains of Montenegro.
