In 2079, in Washington, the ex-CIA Operative Snow is brutally interrogated, accused of treason against the United States. The chief of the secret service Scott Langral believes that he shot the agent Frank in a hotel room. Meanwhile, the idealistic daughter of the president of the USA, Emilie Warnock, is visiting MS One, a maximum security prison in outer space expecting to find evidence that the prisoners are actually guinea pigs of a huge corporation. When one of her bodyguards loses a hidden pistol to the dangerous prisoner Hydell, he subdues the staff in the central control room and releases the prisoners, including his brother Alex who becomes the leader of the riot. Now the veteran agent Harry Shaw offers freedom to Snow if he succeeds in rescuing the president's daughter. But the idealistic Emilie does not want to leave MS-One without the hostages.
A man wrongly convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage against the U.S. is offered his freedom if he can rescue the president's daughter from an outer space prison taken over by violent inmates.
In the future, a CIA operative named Snow is being brutally interrogated by Secret Service. He's accused of killing another CIA agent and taking a briefcase from him. In flashbacks we see what really happened. Snow did have a meeting with the CIA agent who gave him the suitcase and something else. Bad guys in suits show up and kill the guy. Snow is on the run and calls a friend named Mace. Just as Snow is captured he throws the briefcase to Mace, the trains doors close and Mace escapes. He hides the case in the locker of a train station.
While this is taking place, the presidents daughter, Emilie, is visiting the maximum security prison MS1, which is in space no less. There they keep the prisoners in stasis. Emilie who is interested in human rights is worried that stasis permanently damages the brains of the prisoners. She interviews one vicious prisoner named Hydell who takes advantage of the situation and grabs the pistol her security service detail brought into the room against regulations. Now Hydell frees all the other prisoners and takes all the civilians hostage.
Snow's interview ends when a friendly CIA guy shows up and tasks him with the mission to go MS1 and rescue Emilie. In secret they also want to free Mace who is there as well and retrieve the suitcase. If the mission doesn't succeed Secret Service will organize an attack from the a space police station nearby.
Of course things go wrong with the mission. Hydell and his brother Alex, who is in charge, figure out at some point that they have the president's daughter. And while Snow does grab the girl she won't escape unless she saves everyone on board MS1. They do find Mace but his brain is fried. But Snow is resourceful and in the end after some twists we find out what really happened at the beginning and what is going on with the briefcase.
I wasn't expecting much of Lockout but it surprised me how good it was. Even more so for a Luc Besson movie. This one ditches entirely the Euro B-movie feel that most Besson movies have thanks in part to a solid if not downright spectacular cast, starting with Guy Pearce, Vincent Reagan, Peter Stormare, Lennie James, and a star-making performance by Joseph Gilgun. It's a crime that Hollywood hasn't found a way to make Guy Pearce an A-list star. And everyone else is on top of their game. There are no goofy characters here.
The story itself is quite unique mixing high octane action, with the prison theme and putting it all in space. The action goes from spectacular to occasionally cartoonish. The movie retains though Besson's penchant for logic, gravity, and science-defying stuff. Kudos also to St. Leger and Mathe for writing a fresh and funny script. Snow is truly a funny guy and even though he and Emilie spend their time teasing and giving each other a hard time, it's funny and not mean-spirited. The twists were surprising and the story interesting as you do want to find out what's in the briefcase. Lockout has franchise potential at the hand of this team. Snow and Hydell are great characters and St. Leger and Mathe have the writing and directing skills to make it work. I can't wait to see their next project.
It is 2079. Snow (Guy Pearce) is an ex-CIA and now freelance operative (and terminal smartass, with a facetious answer for everything), who is caught up in a doublecross which sees him framed for murder. He is sentenced to 30 years in stasis aboard an orbiting prison. Just before he is due to be dealt with, there is a riot which leads to the President's daughter (among others) being taken hostage. Snow is tasked with rescuing her.
As the synopsis may suggest, there are no major surprises in this movie - it is a straightforward break-in-to-break-out affair, albeit set in orbit rather than in an earthbound prison. As well as Pearce's wisecracking hero, Maggie Grace's heroine is spunky or helpless as the plot demands, and we also have the powers that be (corrupt and foolish, of course), vile rioting criminals (Vincent Cassel very good as their leader, and Joseph Gilgun wonderfully repellent as his psycho idiot brother), a suspenseful countdown and a twist or two in the tail.
This does not stand up to any sort of serious examination, of course (particularly little things like the laws of physics), but that doesn't matter. It is a romp, and rather good fun. I enjoyed it.
Tackles a nifty futuristic premise with bargain-basement efficiency and a deadpan, devil-may-care attitude. It's an initially invigorating tactic that proves slapdash and unsatisfying over the long haul, reducing a potentially rich sci-fier to the level of a halfway decent time-killer
Guy Pearce met with Luc Besson at the beginning of 2010 in LA to discuss the film and then met with Stephen St. Leger and James Mather a few months later. He thought the script felt original, which is always what he is looking for. He also liked the idea of playing an irreverent character like Snow. He was drawn to him because he's not the typical action hero. He exhibited a lazy and exhausted quality. It has quite some tradition that some of writer/producer Luc Besson's movies get censored for a more profitable PG-13 rating. The censorship for the PG-13 rating is obviously no unknown territory for the filmmakers in Besson's team since they managed to take the edge off it very well by applying almost every tool one could think of. Next to using harmless alternate takes or simply cutting something out, the PG-13 also delivers a censored dialogue, audio line and even digitally manufactured visual alterations (and maybe even blood that's not quite as red as it is normally). A lot of effort to make a film that is usually aiming at experienced B-action buffs suitable for teenagers. a5c7b9f00b
