A vulgar private detective is hired to find a missing groupie and is drawn into a mystery involving a series of murders tied to the music industry.
Ford "Mr. Rock n' Roll Detective" Fairlane is experiencing problems, and it's not with the opposite sex. One of them is that all the rock stars pay him with drum sticks, koala bears, food processors and bicycle shorts. Another one of them is that all his employers that want him to find a girl named Zuzu Petals get killed. Why didn't he become a fisherman's detective instead? A must-see for Andrew Dice Clay fans.
In this age of political correctness and gender inclusive language, let me tell you, from the point of view of an artist' it is sure refreshing to see a movie that panders to no special interest group, that didn't tone down it's language because some ethnic minority complained (as in Aladdin), and that pulls no punches. You might also be surprised to find out that this movie was made in 1990's, and not 1960's. Stand up comic Andrew Dice Clay first made his name as a rude, crude and generally unsociable comedian whose routine took
shots at women, minorities and gays with equal abandon and a general lack of good taste. It got to the point where some female performers would refuse to even appear on the same show as Clay (such as happened on Saturday Night Live), because they felt his act was offensive. Some would say that this movie is offensive, as well. Me, I think it's hilarious, well made, and well crafted. The Adventures of Ford Fairlane tells the story of Fairlane, a self-styled `Rock and Roll Detective' who works the seamier side of L.A., namely the music industry. The character is rude and crude, as he says `Some people play hard to get, me, I play hard to want.' It is obvious that the role was written with Clay in mind, for in many ways, it is his stage persona that we are seeing on screen. Anyway, Fairlane gets mixed up in a mystery of drugs, rock and roll, murder, and adultery, in other words, nothing new to him. It is up to the `Rock and Roll Superhero' to solve the case before Police Lt. Amos tramps through all of the good clues and snatches the garland away from Fairlane. This movie, when released to theatres, was generally reviled by everyone who saw it, particularly the critics. In their political correctness, they identified the movie has being peppered with crude remarks, off colour language, and some very politically incorrect language. Thus, they decided that everyone should be offended by it, and panned it in general. Well, as is usual with the mainstream critics, they were right, but their conclusions were all wrong. Sure, the movie is crude and peppered with foul language, but then again, so is Glengarry Glen Ross, and the critics didn't pan it. Yes, the Fairlane character is a lout, but he admits it, and actually manages to change by the end of the flick. But still, when you watch the movie, the Fairlane character is very compelling to watch, and very funny. Get past the political correctness issue and simply enjoy the movie, the performances, the direction, and the music. To start, the music here is great - hell, the movie is set in the world of the music industry, and for the most part, it's good music. The score was produced by Yello, and it's just fine. Sit back and enjoy the sound of the film. On to the direction. Renny Harlin broke onto the scene with this film, and he shows a lot of panache in his direction. Sure, some of the scenes are simple action set-pieces, and he has the annoying habit of reverting to slomo during the shootouts, but overall, this is a good effort, better, I think, than his later work (such as Cliffhanger) - and I know that a lot of what you see here led directly into Die Hard 2: Die Harder. Of the performances on screen, Andrew Dice Clay is a natural. It helps, too, that he is mostly acting in the persona of his stand-up routine, but still, there is something undeniably compelling about his performance that is very difficult to define. Opposite Clay as the evil music company owner is Wayne Newton, who gives a wonderfully sleazy performance as Julian Grendel `Don't play games with me, Mr. Fairlane.' Also on display is Priscilla Presley, who plays Grendel's ex-wife with a certain aloof flair that is really wonderful. On Ford's side is his trusty assistant Jazz, played winningly by Lauren Holly, who makes quite a splash in her film debut. We also get good performances in small roles from Morris Day, and Ed O'Neill. O'Neill plays Lt. Amos with a stolidness that is engaging and entertaining. `I call you Spam because that's what you are.' But over-the-top acting kudos have to go to Robert Englund, who plays the hitman Smiley, and is simply crazed, loony, and wonderful, even with the ludicrous Cockney accent (which, in a weird way, adds to his charm). So who cares if the movie is politically incorrect? We need the film medium to express itself in every way, and not to knuckle under to the pressure from special interest groups. Besides, it's in the American Constitution (and echoed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms) that the people have freedom of expression, so if you don't like the message, then don't watch. However, I recommend you do watch this one.
I never heard of Andre Dice Clay besides seeing him on the celebrity apprentice. He is one of these comedians that can be offensive. If you don't mind hearing a sex joke or something that someone might think is derogatory to women then you probably won't mind. This movie was made in 1990 well before things like South Park and The Hangover movies.
In this movie you have Andre Dice Clay who plays Ford Fairlane "The Rock n' Roll Detective." Just the though of a rock n' roll detective sounds crazy. His character doesn't seem very nice and that's what he is. He says stuff that could be totally offensive and he doesn't care. This movie is filled with plenty of one liners. Part of what makes this movie good is all the one liners like "Hey Harry Shake Me!" This movie is cheesy but also really fun to watch.
The Adventures of the Ford Fairlane is an exceptionally well-made film that is everything you could ever want in an Andrew Dice Clay movie; it's vulgar, tasteless, nasty, cynical, and, at times, very funny.
