20 Dec 2016 With knowledge of the the sequence of hexadecimal values that appear at the beginning of files you can manually work out what format the file is in. Viewing a file in a hex dump can help you find hidden characters that aren't shown when the file is loaded into a normal text editor. Read here to learn more
xxd creates a hex dump of a given file or standard input. It can also convert a hex dump back to its original binary form. Switch to bits (binary digits) dump, rather than hexdump.

Per xxd 's manual page, -c <cols> formats <cols> bytes per line. For example, -c 12 formats 12 bytes per line. The -g <bytes> groups each <bytes> bytes of the <cols> bytes per each line together.
