A 707 aircraft jetliner on its way from Athens to Rome and then to New York City is hijacked by two Lebanese terrorists. The terrorists demand that the pilot take them to Beirut. What the terrorists don't realize is that an elite team of commandos led by Major McCoy (Norris) and by Colonel Alexander (Marvin) as been called into service to eliminate all terrorists on the jetliner and who's involved in the hijacking and try to retake the plane before the terrorists kill all the hostages.
After a plane is hijacked by terrorists, The Delta Force are sent in to resolve the crisis.
My son and I were scanning Netflix and I thought he might like this movie. I really couldn't remember watching Delta Force. It was absurd - at the very beginning there is a guy stuck in a burning building or chopper and he is stuck under a jeep ---- no one in the squad goes to help the guy except Norris, All the others run away and say screw it. even when Norris is helping the guy, Lee Marvin insists they have to get going and close up the plane to leave - he is basically saying whatever I don't care who gets left behind.
Then they try to make this movie seem realistic as that whole scene was supposed to be the attempt to recover the hostages in Iran.
we fast forwarded over most of it - but what we saw was ridiculous - in a final scene a plane is taking off trying to leave Beirut - first of all - the airport is in the middle of a massive cotton field... since when do they grow cotton in Beirut?
there are terrorists ON THE RUNWAY shooting at the plane and the bullets literally bounce off the wheels and the sides of the plane. they shot at the plane with 6 or seven machine guns with the plane driving straight at them for about a minute and didn't do any damage.
we were laughing so hard at how stupid it was.
my son and I both agreed we would have kicked the crap out of the two terrorists that originally took over the plane. that would be more believable than what we were watching.
fun to watch for a laugh and wonder how people were allowed to make this quality of a movie.
At first, I had to remind myself that I was watching a Cannon movie. After all, this studio were notorious for making some of the cheesiest, over the top action romps of the 1980s, and THE DELTA FORCE is nothing of the kind. Instead, it's a taut and suspenseful aeroplane hostage movie that has more in common with the likes of RAID ON ENTEBBE than INVASION USA.
THE DELTA FORCE stars a near unrecognisable Robert Forster (complete with brown contacts) as an Arab terrorist who holds a group of wealthy Jews hostage in a politically motivated act of terrorism. In a throwback to the disaster movies of the '70s, the hostages are played by an all-star cast including George Kennedy, Martin Balsam, Bo Svenson, Shelley Winters, Joey Bishop and Susan Strasberg. The stuff on the plane is fantastic, with the threat of violence hanging heavy in the air and lots of tense stand-offs.
Then things change completely for the film's second hour, where it becomes the kind of cheesy action romp that you expected from the outset. This second half is full of Chuck Norris and his team (including a grumpy Lee Marvin and a briefly-seen Steve James) shooting bad guys, blowing stuff up and rescuing people. It's the sort of action that contains motorbikes fitted with rocket launchers and all manner of similar nonsense. That's not to say it's not entertaining, but it is at odds with the serious first half of the film. Norris and Norris alone would return for the equally cheesy sequel.
yes, its based on the TWA Flight 847 was an international Trans World Airlines flight which was hijacked by Lebanese Shia Extremists, later identified as members of Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad, on Friday morning, June 14, 1985, after originally taking off from Cairo, Egypt. The flight was en route from Athens, Greece to Rome, Italy, from where it was scheduled to travel on to London. The aircraft with its passengers and crew endured a three-day intercontinental ordeal during which passengers were threatened and some beaten. Passengers with Jewish-sounding names were moved apart from the others, and another passenger, U.S. Navy diver Robert Dean Stethem, was tortured and murdered, his body unceremoniously thrown onto the tarmac. Dozens of passengers were held hostage over the next two weeks, until released by their captors after some of their demands were met.
The initial demands of the hijackers included:
the release of the "Kuwait 17," those involved in the bombing of the U.S. embassy in Kuwait. the release of all 766 mainly Lebanese Shias transferred to Israel in conjunction with Israel's immediate withdrawal from Lebanon;(a pullout had been underway since January and was already virtually complete) international condemnation of Israel and the United States. and condemnation of the March 8, 1985, car bombing in the Beirut suburb of Bir al Abed earlier that year.The Greek government released the accomplice Ali Atwa and in exchange the hijackers released eight Greek citizens, including Greek pop singer Demis Roussos.
The iconic image of this hijacking was a photograph showing a gun being held to the pilot's head (sticking out of the cockpit window) as the pilot is being questioned by reporters, but it was actually an unloaded gun held by a teenaged security guard who wanted to be on television.
Flight attendant Uli Derickson was widely credited with calming the hijackers and saving the lives of many passengers. Because her German was the only common language with the hijackers, who spoke poor English, she acted as translator and liaison for most of the ordeal.Notably, she defused a tense situation in Algiers when airport officials refused to refuel the plane without payment by offering her own Shell Oil credit card, which was used to charge about $5,500 for 6,000 gallons of jet fuel, for which she later was reimbursed.She also hid the passports of Jewish passengers so they could not be singled out. a5c7b9f00b
