"Z Nation" is TWD with the serial numbers filed off. It's intended as a faux version of TWD that conforms to network episodic action-adventure practices of the 1980s and 90s.
Most of the world-building of TWD is utilized within Z Nation, including "turning" after a zombie bite, and the idea that the virus/cause is pervasive and universal and affects anyone that dies. (Also anyTHING... unfortunately.) What Z Nation adds is: a road trip framework for the show; an ally (I guess he died sometime in season 2) named "Citizen Z" at an NSA base in the arctic, played by DJ Qualls, who coaches the team through tight situations - inexplicably, because the power happens to be on for every security camera that Citizen Z chooses to tap into. Also: animals such as bears and fox that are undead zombies; a very unlikely universal spoken meme of "giving mercy" by shooting the Z in the head - TWD shows that even nearby communities develop entirely different colloquial names for the zombies. Also kinky sexual practices involving the undead (season 2 ep 1 has two semi-zombies in on-stage sexual play and one starts to eat the other's face, while Murph scolds them saying "girls, girls, we talked about this".) In most other ways, "Z Nation" is a standard action/adventure series, very similar in style and tone to something such as "Macgyver" or "The A-Team", with an ensemble cast, but with zombies as the antagonist.
There are a lot of other details I didn't mention about Z Nation's world building. In general the creators have glopped on all manner of detailed "innovations" that come off like Taco Bell's 39 different kinds of burrito - completely overdone and unnecessary. Radioactive zombies, check. Zombies that are not quite dead and with some power of reason, check. Zombie babies, check. And again, why are the freaking power lines still operating and feeding all of the IP cameras across the US, three years after the apocalypse? CHECK.
The point is, TWD is quite believable if you accept the basic premise of the undead. Z Nation is cartoon-fantasy garbage with ridiculously flawed world building.
Z Nation has a few light moments as almost all TV action/adventure has which is one distinction from TWD. Like TWD, it kills off cast members from time to time.
Season one was promising and at times felt a bit innovative. That didn't last. Midway into season 2, they unnecessarily tried to redo magic by re-enacting the Liberty Bell tumbling through the street scene from season 1 with a large wheel of cheese. Plus the stripper scene of episode 1. The mediocrity of SciFi was starting to show in full bloom.
All in all, this is typical moronic SciFi network schlock. I stopped watching it as the idiocy level rose to intolerable levels.
I'm giving this a 10 as I feel a 4.9 rating is a huge miscarriage of justice by bitter WD fanboys. In reality I think it deserves about a 7/10, about on a par with the Walking Dead, first half of the season was worse than the Walking Dead but the second half was more entertaining than most Walking Dead episodes.
I'd recommend finishing the 1st season before making a judgment call on it, I almost gave up on it after the first few episodes but it does gets better and is really hitting its stride by the end of the season. I also think the pacing is better than WD and it has a lot less filler episodes. The acting is passable but in fairness the acting on the WD isn't exactly stellar either.
