When Doug's father, an Air Force Pilot, is shot down by MiGs belonging to a radical Middle Eastern state, no one seems able to get him out. Doug finds Chappy, an Air Force Colonel who is intrigued by the idea of sending in two fighters piloted by himself and Doug to rescue Doug's father after bombing the MiG base. Their only problems: Borrowing two fighters, getting them from California to the Mediteranean without anyone noticing, and Doug's inability to hit anything unless he has music playing. Then come the minor problems of the state's air defenses.
A young pilot plans a rescue mission when his father, an Air Force Colonel, is shot down over enemy territory and captured.
The best indictment of the believability of this movie came while I was an instructor in the USAF Fighter Lead-in Program at Holloman AFB, NM. We had a USN student in one class, and I was ragging on him pretty good about all the Hollywood BS that was in "Top Gun." After I mentioned that the Soviet tactic for defeating the F-14 was to get in front and catch it in your jetwash, he shut me up real good when he replied, "Sir, you keep this up and I'll bring up "Iron Eagle!" He sure had me there.
Good flick if you know nothing about military flying or you're about 10 years old and dream of being 16 and flying jets. Otherwise forget it.
Without actually giving away my age, I saw this for the first time over 20 years ago when it first came out on video (maybe it was a beta tape??) and I was old enough to drink (barely) and perhaps I had had a few because I remember thinking how great this movie was! I have since seen it sober and have to admit it is a pretty bad film. As mentioned in other posts the plot is absolutely ridiculous and the poor acting just makes it worse. It's a poor attempt to fantasize that teenagers too, can be "Mavericks" (although I am surprised to find out it actually was to be released the same time (aprox) as "Top Gun", and not actually meant to be a poor imitation.) But for all it's worth - I do find myself watching it if it's on and I have the time. It's one of those movies you watch because it's just so ridiculous and tries so desperately to take itself seriously. Like that other "great' film - "Moment by Moment" with John Travolta and Lily Tomlin....don't get me started on that one!
The vulgarity and jingoism of Iron Eagle prevent it from functioning even as breezy entertainment. [17 Jan 1986, p.C10]
