Each orbital is denoted by a number and a letter. The number denotes the energy level of the electron in the orbital. Thus 1 refers to the energy level closest to the nucleus; 2 refers to the next energy level further out, and so on. The letter refers to the shape of the orbital. The letters go in the order s, p, d, f, g, h, i, j, etc.

1 Feb 2018 s orbitals are spherical; p orbitals are polar and are oriented in particular directions (x, y, and z). It may be simpler to think of these two letters in terms of orbital shapes (d and f aren't described as readily). However, if you look at a cross-section of an orbital, it isn't uniform. For the s orbital, for example, there
9 Jul 2017 The second shell contain s & p orbital ,the p orbital can have maximum 6 electrons. The third shell contain S , p & d orbital ,d orbital can have maximum 10 electrons .The forth shell contain s , p , d & f orbital, f can have maximum 14 electrons . The p orbital have dumbbell shape , it contain subshell known as px which lies on
Orbital Shapes. The hydrogen atoms orbitals are the "wavefunction" portion of the quantum mechanical solution to the hydrogen atom. The wavefunctions tell us about the probability of finding the electron at a certain point in space. Thus the orbitals offer us a picture of the electron in a hydrogen atom. However, this picture
The order of filling the quantum levels with electrons is given and how to work our electron configurations and write out electron configurations for atoms using the Auf-Bau Principle, Pauli's exclusion principle and Hund's rule of maximum multiplicity using 'box diagrams' to represent an individual orbital.
An orbital is a wave function for an electron defined by the three quantum numbers, n, ? and ml. Orbitals define regions in space where you are likely to find electrons. p orbitals (? = 1) are dumb-bell shaped. The three possible p orbitals are always perpendicular to each other.

Thus, the s subshell may contain only one orbital and the p subshell may contain three orbitals. Each orbital has its own distinct shape. An s orbital found in a s subshell is spherical, p orbitals found in p subshells are two-lobed, and d orbitals found in d subshells are four-lobed.
