14 Dec 2007 You can always work up to full house loads as long as you have the proper firearm. If you hand load there is nothing the .450 Marlin can do that the .45-70 can't. If you don't handload the .45-70 is much easier to find. Now if you want somthing that is really stout call WildAlaska and get a guide gun in .50 AK.
I have owned a 45-70 (not in a Guide Gun) and I currently have a 450 Marlin Guide Gun. I love both cartridges and can't find a smidgeon of difference in terms of performance. Both are amazing thumpers and a joy to load for and shoot. IF you handload, buy the one that you can get the best deal on.

I think if I had my The only use I'd have for either of them is to carry for protection in bear territory, and I'd probably go with the 45-70 in the Marlin Guide Gun.
