The Australian Dietary Guidelines (the Guidelines) provide up-to-date advice about the amount and kinds of foods that we need to eat for health and wellbeing. The recommendations are based on scientific evidence, developed after looking at good quality research.
Activity A. Show the students a blank healthy food plate template (U1L2R1) Allow the students some time to think of the names of the food groups that will fit into the plate. Activity B. Watch the short video 'What's On Your Plate' which discusses what types of foods are necessary for a balanced main meal.
Enlarge blank copies of The Australian. Guide to Healthy Eating proforma on page 18. A supply of magazines containing a variety of food pictures will also be needed. In groups of 3, children discuss and list foods that they think are good for you and foods that are not good for you. Views are then shared with the class,
The Canteen Connection Teaches students about making healthy food choices in the canteen. What to Eat? Introduces the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating a menu for their lunch. Give each group a blank Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. Ask students to draw and label the foods chosen for their lunch on the guide.
