RIM has announced two new smartphones this morning — the BlackBerry Bold 9790 and the BlackBerry Curve 9380 — which extend the reach of BlackBerry OS 7. For many of you, the BlackBerry may be the only smartphone you have ever known. For years I had personally experimented with Windows Mobile, Palm, and BlackBerry OS, so change was not something I feared, as long as the new phone the same functionality I used daily. I took a look at my standard use. However, it's a little fiddly to setup and BlackBerry OS lacks the simple menus of Android and iOS. Hardware wise, the Bold 9790 is bang up-to-date, with NFC and 5GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi built in. There's little support for NFC at the moment, but 5GHz wireless may be useful if you've got a posh router and want. Understanding the Update The BlackBerry Bold 9700 currently has a software update to BlackBerry OS 6.0. A data plan is required to complete this update.
