Frank Murphy, of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Police's helicopter division (ASTRO), and newcomer Richard Lymangood on his first patrol, help take down the perpetrators of what appears to be a robbery and attempted rape of a city councilwoman. They are little aware of the much larger and more sinister plot behind the attack, much less that they will soon find themselves right in the middle of it. Murphy (Roy Scheider) and Lymangood (Daniel Stern) then learn that they have been selected to test a new, state-of-the-art, high-performance helicopter with cutting-edge surveillance capabilities--Blue Thunder. Disconcertingly, unlike other police aircraft, Blue Thunder is also equipped with powerful weaponry. When Murphy is introduced to the lead pilot for the program he finds that it is an old nemesis from his tours in Vietnam, Col. Cochrane (Malcolm McDowell), who is none too pleased to learn who has been selected for the test. Soon Murphy and Lymangood, via the helicopter's information system, discover disquieting hints that there may be much bigger and less honorable plans for the 'copter than they've been told, leading them to defy orders and seek more information on their own. It is now up to them, with the help of Murphy's spirited wife, Kate, to blow the lid off the plot and expose the villainy within.

A young Daniel Stern, is a rookie who is assigned with Scheider, together the pair unravel a deadly conspiracy,involving said helicopter which climaxes with a superb aerial chase through the packed streets of Los Angeles,
Awesome Action/Thriller, with lots Of exciting Action, and an amazing performance from Roy Scheider!.The helicopter scenes are breathtaking, and it had, awesome characters, plus Malcolm McDowell is very menacing as the main villain. All the characters were great, and there are some really outstanding action scenes, plus the story is very engrossing. This film is vastly underrated, and the movie is very unpredictable, plus, the ending is way cool!. I can't believe this movie only has 1 5.9 rating on this site it should at least be around the 7.0 mark, in fact i would rate around the 9.0 mark myself.It did drag a tiny bit at the end, but it was still extremely entertaining to watch, as the finale is very exciting. This is a great action/thriller flick, that i say is a must see!. The Direction is awesome!. John Badham does an awesome job here, with incredible camera angles, amazing shots, great shots of the helicopter, and keeping the film at a very fast pace. There is a tiny bit of gore. we get a few bloody gunshot wounds but that's it. The Acting is Awesome!. Roy Scheider is AMAZING as always, and is amazing here, he is extremely likable, funny, intense, and had some classic one liners, plus he was tons of fun to watch!, he is one of my favorite actors. (Scheider Rules!). Warren Oates is good with what he had to do i liked him. Candy Clark is decent as the love interest, she had okay chemistry with Roy, and did what she had to do adequately.Malcolm McDowell is very menacing as the main villain and as always was very bizarre and unpredictable, this guy rocks!. Daniel Stern is very good as the young cop, i really liked him. Overall this is a must see!. **** out of 5
Expertly executed action flick that starts out fast and winds up faster. We've seen it all before, but the execution here supersedes the concept.
On the DVD a chase at the end has been shortend and shows alternative material. The tape offers a car stunt whole the driver escapes a bit boring in the shorter version. a5c7b9f00b
