Book descriptionGrades Pre-K-2, and possibly students beginning to learn to play instruments.Part of me wants to give this book ZERO stars, the other part wants to give it a four. IвЂ™m honking mad, but I wonder if the illustrator is equally as irritated.RANT: As a music teacher and a musician I CANNOT STAND WHEN PEOPLE ARE PORTRAYED HOLDING AN INSTRUMENT INCORRECTLY!!!! I know some people restring guitars so that they are strumming with the left hand, and I can buy that maybe some people will restring a banjo as well. BUT NOT A VIOLIN! A violin is always ALWAYS on the left shoulder and bowed with the right hand, a clarinet is always played left hand on top of right and a trumpet is always fingered with the right hand. I realize in the grand scheme of things this may not be important to most, but itвЂ™s a pet peeve of mine. About as irritating as someone who says вЂњSupposablyвЂќ instead of вЂњSupposedlyвЂќ.There are two things that save this book from being tossed at a wall. The first is that I could use it to teach students how NOT to hold an instrument. The second is that perhaps this is not the fault of the illustrator. I donвЂ™t know how illustrations are put into books, but my guess is that there is an opportunity for some pictures to end up inverted. So possibly the illustrator DID correctly place the instruments, but the publisher screwed it up somehow. The evidence is the pictures in the Glossary, some are inverted to show the instruments I complained about being held correctly, while others (Saxophone always left hand on top of right) that were correct in the book are incorrect in the glossary. BAD PULBLISHERS!!! BAD, BAD, BAD!!! They need to be spanked!RANT OVERSo, the good part of the book (that will get infinitely less space than my rant, because the bad always gets more attention than the good) is that this book is a wonderful way to introduce different styles of music to an elementary classroom.
