1 May 2017 Planting: You can start aquilegia from seed or plant. Seeds can be direct sown throughout spring. The seeds need light to germinate, so simply press them on the soil surface and barely cover with soil. Since aquilegia is a perennial, it will take 2 years from planting seed, for them to bloom.
19 Mar 2015 Columbine plants aren't too particular about soil as long it's well draining and not too dry. While they enjoy full sun in most areas, they don't like it very hot, especially during summer. Therefore, in warmer areas like the south, grow them in partial shade and give them plenty of mulch to help keep the soil
Soil and Sun for Columbine Flowers. Columbines, or aquilegia, are lovely woodland plants with blooms in a variety of colors that are surprisingly easy to grow. Since they grow wild in woodland and mountain areas, they do best in a location with partial sun or dappled shade. They will suffer in full afternoon sun, so observe
9 Jun 2015 Aquilegias lend themselves to cottagey or semi-wild settings. Most relish dappled shade. They love deep, rich soil. Most garden varieties do not resent clay, but alpine types prefer well-drained loam. When planting, work in extra humus: old muck or garden compost is best. Mulch with the same material.
Moisture: Aquilegia prefers to start dry and the soil should dry out between watering. Avoid areas with heavy soil or clay or they will be very short lived. Depth: Plant with the top of the crown about 1/2" below soil level and then mulch lightly. After planting the root should not be showing.
3 May 2012 Aquilegias, also known as columbines, are members of the Ranunculaceae, or buttercup family, named after 'Rana', the genus of frogs. The May-flowering, hardy perennial aquilegias prefer cool, dappled shade (rather like frogs) and they grow in a range of soils, up to a height of around 18in (0,5m).
Propagation. There are as many ways of sowing Aquilegias as there are gardeners, but this is what I do: I sow in winter, starting whenever I receive seeds (and to suit myself), anytime after Christmas. I keep the 3" pots in an unheated gr eenhouse (keeps cats etc at bay!) after very lightly covering the seeds with compost.

Choose the right time to plant. Columbine seedlings can be moved out side in spring or summer. To make sure they're ready for transplanting at that time, start the seeds inside in starter pots about eight weeks before the last expected frost. 2. Fill a seed pot with moistened potting soil. Columbines require soil that's moist and
