The American Civil War is in its second year and Johnnie Gray is barred from enlisting. He is a train engineer and the Confederate Army feel he is more valuable to the Southern cause in his current role than in the army. This frustrates Johnnie and has estranged him from his sweetheart Annabelle, who views him as a coward. Then his beloved engine, The General, is stolen by Union spies and is heading for Union lines. Moreover, Annabelle is on board. Johnnie sets off after the two loves of his life."The General" is considered by many to be the best comedy of the silent film era. That's quite a reputation to live up to, but having now seen it I can readily see why it's thought of so highly, and say that it doesn't disappoint in the least. It's a totally one-of-a-kind film, and completely pleasurable and engrossing from start to finish. It's been said that it isn't properly a comedy, but I think once one starts watching it doesn't matter: the simple and human but methodical and intricate story of how Buster sets out singlehandedly to rescue the train and woman he loves is so absorbing that when the comedy (which is as musically times as the rest of the film and all hits home) stop we are too busy being thrilled by the stunts, coincidences, and stunning set pieces to notice, and when these stop we are too busy laughing to care.
Perhaps eighty per cent of "The General's" hundred or so minutes consist of one train chasing after another on the tracks. It's no surprise this brings unity, but it's a unique achievement for Buster that even within that potentially monotonous framework nothing becomes repetitious and the tension never ceases. The film-making itself and the timing in these hugely complicated shots involving steam trains narrowly missing each other and countless other obstructions is so precise and flawless that it would be possible simply to ignore the rest of the film and marvel at that for the running time if one felt like it.
Buster Keaton's brilliantly off-kilter and eccentric way of viewing the world -- creating hilarious gags both social and mechanical that seem woven from exactly the same cloth -- comes together with a relatable and admirable quest story with natural and highly sympathetic human interest, and some of the most technically pin-perfect execution imaginable to create an extraordinary mix of comedy and thrill that we can invest in too. It's definitely among the most memorable films I've ever seen.Another Amazing silent film! When I sat down to watch this film I had never heard of any of the actors featured. Within the first few minutes of the film, I was hooked. The love between Johnnie Gray played by Buster Keaton and Annabelle Lee played by Marion Mack was too sweet for words that he was even willing to enlist in the Civil War for her on the side of the south. When he was denied the chance to go to war because he was a valuable man for the railroad, then Annabelle Lee not wanting to see him ever again because she felt he was lying, through the facial expressions of Buster Keaton I was able to feel the pain he was feeling inside. i was surprised to find that this movie was a comedy because there were only a few parts I found funny. Only a few will take the trouble to find a good print or spend money improving the one they have. You may find the film on any number of cheaply-priced discs. Finding a copy with good picture and sound is another matter. Shop around.

The quality of the music on DVDs of silent movies varies from distributor to distributor. Some record original scores, some carefully piece together a score from public domain sources and some slap on an irrelevant soundtrack. This film does have good distributors that use good music scores. Shop around. Try watching a silent film without one. When the music is good, it adds to your enjoyment of the film. Even a mediocre score is better than nothing. Yes.
