A British homicide detective investigates a murder in a German-occupied England in a parallel universe where the Nazis won World War II.
England, 1941. Germany, having successfully invaded in 1940, is now in control of the UK. The SS now run the country but for general law and order, a famed Scotland Yard detective. Archer walks a thin line, as his job requires him to work closely with the despised SS, the vanguard of Nazi fascism. To some this makes him a traitor. An English resistance movement exists but Archer believes that resistance is futile and will only lead to further bloodshed. Then a murder case draws him into the struggle, and into a plot of international proportions.
The Germans had won the Battle of Britain invaded and history would have taken a sinister turn for the worse. The truth is we will never know but this series based on Len Deightons book does an admirable job of suggesting what might have been. Sam Reilly plays a Scotland Yard detective now under the rule of the SS who is torn between his new masters and his loyalty to King and country. Whilst not as good as Amazons big budget Man In The High Castle. It still raises many questions of might have been.
Just preposterous and stupid!
I gave this bilge water 15 minutes of my time and then gave up, so this is NOT a fair review... but the painful time I wasted watching this was enough to torment me so much, I couldn't watch another single second!
In the opening scene (after the introductory credits play out) we see a couple in a Nazi-occupied hotel. It's made painfully clear to the viewer that they are not supposed to be there. So what does the girl do? This bright spark thinks it's a good idea to wrap her body with a Nazi flag, throw open the balcony doors of the hotel room and gaze out over occupied London for all the world to see. After that, she parades around the bedroom dressed only in the flag. Not offensive (at least, to me) just mind-blowingly ridiculous.
In a scene that follows soon after, we are at the house of a murder victim and the Doctor is SLEEPING on the dead man's couch just a couple of feet away. It's safe to say that this doctor has seen just a bit too much action to make him THIS blase about his work!
But even that stupidity isn't the biggest crime in this asinine BBC train-wreck... for the entire time I was subjected to this dreck, I couldn't understand a bloody word of what was said. Now, I'm an old English man so you'd think that would have given me an advantage, but it didn't.
It seems that in the new world order of Nazi-occupied England, mumbling and indistinct dialog has been written into the new civilian standing orders!
Read Len Deighton's book. It's a lot different... and a lot better!
