V Brakes require mounting lugs relatively low on the fork, or a separate piece of metal on which the actual brake arms are mounted. On most road I know I'm about 3 miles behind the parade here, but I use v-brakes on my 'cross bike with STI shifters that I use for commuting, and they work wonderfully.

Correctly set up V brakes don't make feathering any harder or easier than correctly set up cantilevers. What you give up with V brakes is clearance--for things like mud. If you ride in dry conditions, the V brake is likely superior. If you ride a CX bike mostly on road or gravel, the V brake is likely superior.
