14 Nov 2012 There are two ways to increase the capacity of a ZFS pool either add more disks to the pool (e.g. 3 more disks in RAIDZ1), or replace all the existing disks with larger ones this is the method discussed here today. These instructions assume that you have followed my installation guide for ZFS.
6 Feb 2013 So in short, whats the correct way to manage adding extra disks to the nas after configuring zfs? The new disks wont be going into that pool as it happens, they will probably be in software raid 1 with my current plan. Basically I need to create the zfs pool and copy my old nas data to it, then take the disks out
30 Oct 2012 Now I would like to expand that volume called Set1 by adding one 1TB disk, can I just use the volume manager for this to add the disk to the existing volume and A ZFS pool is made out of vdevs and ZFS doesn't care too much how cleverly or how stupidly you make your vdevs, or that they match, etc.
8 Nov 2016 I've been a fan of ZFS for quite a few years, mostly on my home labs, but a few times in production. The other week I needed to rebuild my home built NAS/Server and lacking enough drives went with a 3 drive RAIDz configuration, thinking that once I copied the data over to it I could then add one of the
2 Jan 2016 With ZFS, you either have to buy all storage you expect to need upfront, or you will be wasting a few hard drives on redundancy you don't need. This fact is often overlooked, but it's very important when you are planning your build. Other software RAID solutions like Linux MDADM lets you grow an existing
4 Jan 2015 Description This tutorial is meant for ZFS users who would like to add more storage space to existing ZFS pool. Currently there is a 6-disks, RAID-Z2 vdev in my ZFS pool. To expand the zpool to increase the disks space, another 6 disks are added to the server. In this example, a 2nd vdev will be created
2 Jun 2014 Looking around for NAS software I settled on FreeNAS, which apart from seeming to be generally well-regarded, also gave me an excuse to dip my toe into FreeBSD land and to use ZFS, about which BTW, another thing that ZFS apparently can't do is expand an existing RAID array by adding a new disk.
19 Feb 2016 Software RAID. Add the Disks. Prepare (format) the disks. Create the Software RAID array. Format the software RAID array. Create the mount point. Software RAID If your hardware has enough ram to use ZFS, then you should be using ZFS, and not any other form of software or hardware RAID. Software
27 Nov 2014 In this article we will cover configuration of FreeNAS to setup ZFS storage disks and enabling NFS share on FreeNAS to share on Unix and Windows systems.
When adding disks to increase the capacity of a volume, ZFS supports the addition of virtual devices, known as vdevs, to an existing ZFS pool. A vdev can be a single disk, a stripe, a mirror, a RAIDZ1, RAIDZ2, or a RAIDZ3. Once a vdev is created, you can not add more drives to that vdev; however, you can stripe a new vdev
