I.E. Is there perhaps a registry setting (or can one be created) that would let me say "exclude this drive from Windows HDD power management"? HDDscan DOES seem to provide for BOTH individual drive timed spin-down control AND manual spin-down control (although the manual "spin-down now" is
18 Feb 2014 gnome-disk-utility is broken in this regard. You can manually set the timer with sudo hdparm -S 60 /dev/sda , or you can just manually put it to sleep when you are done using it with sudo hdparm -y /dev/sda . See bug #1281588. I will prepare a fix and if you could test and verity that it works that would be
WD external hard drive spins down after several minutes of inactivity. Answer ID 1376. Most WD external hard drives will spin down (enter into power saver mode) after 10 minutes of drive inactivity. Once the drive is accessed again, the drive will exit from the power saver mode and spin back up.

Plus, an independent reason - sometimes I work in libraries, and the HDD is noisy enough that I'd like to spin it down RIGHT after it's opened a file (or whatever) rather than

In that case you can't set the APM_level manually, but you can still change the spin-down time by using e.g. "sudo hdparm -S180 /dev/sda" to spin down sda after 15 minutes. Important note: With many systems there is a bug (or bad documented problem) right now, resulting in your hard drive spinning down every minute or
4 Nov 2011 I'm trying to spin down my drives. It's not in any of the old places that I can find. It's not in screen saver or power settings and I checked under disk utilities for the hell of it with no luck. Upon searching the form, it appears their is no gui or idiot proof way to spin down the drives in fedora by default any more.
15 Dec 2014 Instead of manually trying to figure this out, rely on existing stuff. I use hd-idle on my file server, it works great. I also don't unmount my drives because there's really no reason to do so. If I want to access a file, the disks will spin up. Then, after the timeout passes, they'll spin down again. If you're super
16 Jul 2017 Greetings! I have a 1TB external drive plugged into my pi and tried installing hdparm to get it to spin down when not in use but I believe "write cache is not possible for the drive". I was following a guide here https://www.htpcguides.com/spin-down-an pberry-pi/ Any suggestions? I wasn't even aware that I
